INVESTORS UPDATE

$240 PLO8 @ Golden Nugget

Another tale of woe I'm afraid, a mixture of marginal spots, ultimately poor decisions, & a bit of run bad I suppose. Hard to keep saying it without it sounds like I'm moaning, buit it's just how it is.

Great table to start, most enjoyable all trip I think, with a bunch of the usual PLO8 regulars. A $20 Last-Longer soon attracted 11 Brits & friends, & much banter ensued.

One lovely surprise was that an old friend, Kate Langshaw, aka "kaibobble" was on my table. Kate moved to Spain some 2 or 3 years ago, & still lives there happily with her beefy, handsome, & 10 years younger Argentinian fella. BOOM! So we had to catch up & reminiscence & all that.

She is here with Paul Jackson's "Bankroll Supply" team, as she works for them. Previously, she was with DTD for a while, & before that, AWOP. Many of you will remember Kate, who mainly used to play @ Blackpool back in the day. She has lost almost 2 stone since I last saw her, & looks very trim.

Anyway, the Tournament.....

Made a steady start, & was nicely in the groove.

Strange how it happens, but all is calm & serene one moment, then suddenly, BAM, a monster clash goes off.

I'll spare you the boring details, but we were 3 way to the flop, Kate, myself, & an old miserable local.

Kate had raised pre, I had called in position, & Missog called oop.

Kate had....

  Two Diamonds

I had....

  two spades

Missog, well I could not see his tabled hand @ showdown, (we were opposite sides of the dealer) but he had all high cards, all red, 9-J-Q-A or similar.

Anyway, we see this flop.....

So, now you can see how this pot got so big.

Kate & I both had nut low draws.

Kate had Top Set

I had 2 pair, nut low draw, nut flush draw.

Missog was wrapped round the 8-10.

The turn was a red 3.

It all kicked off now, as I had nut low, nut flush draw, & a wheel draw. Kate had the same nut low, plus her set of tens. Missog had picked up a flush draw.

Kate now pots it.

I know I could get quartered or worse here, & I can find a fold if I really try, but my spade re-draw, in what was building to a huge 3 way pot, was too tempting, plus I had chance of a wheel, too, so a potential scoopio, or a potential sixthed.

Some considerable pondering ensued, but I felt I had to go for it, & I re-potted. Missog, to my surprise, calls all-in for a bit less (I had assumed it would just be Kate & I) & Kate overshoved with a similar stack to me.

So, over 40,000 in the middle, in Level 2. Ooohh.

The river was a red Queen, & Missog got the high, & half the pot, whilst Kate & I split the low but she got the High in the side pot, so she three quartered me. Pre-river, all results were possible, I could get the lot, or get badly chopped, & I knew that.

After some considerable time sorting the various pots & side pots, I think I was left with around 11,000 of my original 15,000, out of a pot of about 43,000, so not a disaster I suppose. Kate had me three quartered all the way, but a spade (non-pairing) & I would 3/4 her, & bust Missog, & get around 34,000. Amazing how so much can depend on that last card.

Not a bad beat, all perfectly standard stuff, & I maybe find the fold even with the nut low if I dont have 4 to the nut flush.

Cliffs - never got there.

This seemed to mess with my head a bit. 11,000 chips @ 100-200 or whatever is fine, but I keep getting in these bad spots, & it sort of distrubed my peace of mind a tad.

Shortly after that I dug myself a giant hole when I made a spectacular misjudgement.

I had worked out a plan, knew (or thought I did) what the guy had, & was pretty sure that I had a great chance to scoop.

In fact, I completely misjudged what he had, & my improvers failed to arrive, (& there were far less than I had assumed), so suddenly I was in poo town. I was effectively playing for half the pot as it turned out, (this is a BAD thing....) & even that failed to arrive.

I could continue with the gory details of my eventual demise, but in short, that was pretty much that.

Today, it is the $200 PLO8 @ Binions, & no doubt Team Marky will be there, too.

One of the PLO8, PLO & Mixed Game regulars is a guy who I see here every year, & has featured in a number of WSOP Day Twos this year, as usual.

His name is Robert Price, from the civilised portion of Cornwall, & he reads this Diary daily (Hi Rob!). Think he plays mainly on Party Poker.

So, I'd been railing Scotty last night, & wondered back via the Cash Tables, where I noticed a few empty seats on a $1-$2 (actually, in reality, $5 $5) Big O Cash Table. Rob was on the table, & I went across to chat.

Quite by chance, he mentioned the name of Doobs, who, it seems, he knows, not well, but a bit, & I explain that I know Doobsy quite well, though mainly in the virtual world. Small world, virtual or not.

Bla bla, he invites me to sit in, but I'm not carrying cash, Rob then loans me $1,000 (repaid since by Bank TX Rob, ty ty).

Off we go again, then. This is not going where you think it is. Well, actually, maybe it is, but not in the presumed manner, & so no, I don't insta do it back to Rob.

The Max pull up on this $1-$2 (in reality $5-$5) Big O (5 card PLO8) is $500, so I sit with my $500 & settle down for a nice session.

I've had numerouis sessions already, which I've not written about, but fair to say they have not been a spectacular success, in fact they have been similar to my Tourneys.

So, I'm facing a raise from mid-position, & I have the most beautiful looking PLO8 hand you can imagine. It was (might not be EXACTLY this, but the key cards & suits are correct).....

  Two Clubs

POT.

Once Matey Boy repots, we pretty much know the score here, I suppose he could have A-2-3-whatever, but it's 90% certain he also has Aces.

We both get it all-in foir similar stacks.

He does have Aces, though only one suit (diamonds), & he has a 3 not a 2, which I like very much, as I'm beating his low nicely.

The flop, almost inevitably, came 2-4-High, with 2 diamonds, so my low was crushed, his flush arrived on the turn, & the 4 paired on the jolly old river.

$500 down the swanee, just like that.

Pulled up the other $500, ran much better, & after 3 hours I had it up to $850, at which point I decided to quit whilst I was not in terrible shape, as a loss of $150 felt quite good after facing a $500 loss, & my confidence would have been in a million bits if I lost that $850.

It's all standard stuff, but in my last 2 visits, I've run the other side of that fickle bitch, variance.

Apologies for lack of updates, but no wifi in Binions.

161 runners, about 50 left I think, we are on dinner break now, resume in 20 minutes.

Not got many chips, but nothing new there.

Stand by the poker room (not the tournament room) and you can connect to the binions poker network: bpublic. The password is pokerface.

Utterly ridiculous that a casino can't get WiFi for the area where poker is played, but there you go.

.....I played my final hand.

Anyway, no good again yesterday.

Played MUCH better, really concentrated & focussed, & was going along nicely with 30 left from 161 starters.

And then.....

I raise in late position with.....

...& get called by a young lady who plays A-2-x-x hands very strongly.

When we saw this flop, I thought it was my flop.....

I mean, I have an Ace, & there is one on the flop, so it'd be a bit unlikely that she has two of the buggers.

She did.

I winced a bit, in truth.

Onwards & somewherewards.

Today, it is the $1,500 WSOP PLO8.

In truth, my confidence is shot to pieces, & I'm not playing as well as I think I am able, so I debated with myself long & hard whether I should play this, but despite that exit, I played & ran better yesterday, so I paid in last night & I'm playing today.

Brasilia, Silver, Table 39, Seat 4, Noon.

Good luck today Tikay Vegas is great if we win a bit when there ,but if we don't it feels awful ,I've been back home a week now and thoroughly enjoyed it all apart from air con flu for my last. 4 days which confined me to bed for 2 days

I've had the time of my life, but fair to say, when we run really bad (or imagine we do), it does take a bit of the gloss off an otherwise idyllic experience.

When that Ace fell, & I realised it was the case ace, it did pinch a bit, but it's standard stuff in Omaha or PLO8 really, & it just hurt more because it was the latest in a sequence. I would imagine Ryan Spittles felt a lot worse, he had a great shot at half a milly.

Generally, I want a low part in my hand if I play a big pot in PLO8, & I never had a low, so that was not ideal, but I still think the exit play was OK-ish. The Low never came, as it happened, we turn & river were both 10's, so we both housed up.

The young lady who busted me turned out to be a bit of a character, & a mini celeb in her own right, with a rich & long history in poker, & she was regaling us with tales galore. Once I realised who she was, I was pressing her to tell us tales, & she had some corkers.

"Did you know Stu Unger?

"Stu? Yes, of course, I dated him for a while".....

No reason to disbelieve her, either. A dozen other stories were told, & they all checked out. Best not mention Kenna James though.

Stare at a wonderfully evocative photo like this for a few minutes, & a thousand thoughts come to mind.
