You socked it to me.

All we need now is for Celtic to post another plug for the Last Man Standing thread.

Very good.

Think I'll ban Celtic if he keeps spamming this Diary. It's an outrage.

The plug should have been close by, too, but it was at home, in my study, where I had stupidly left it......

Ever since I can remember, I've wanted a study.

Ha!

KNEW I should have written "office", or, to be really accurate, "the little back bedroom".

I just like the vision that word creates in my mind, a study.

I have a little desk in there, my laptop "station", a little tv, and two bookcases. It's where I work from when at home, I play my poker in there, too.

"study" is one of those peculiar words that can have several meanings.

I study

The study

A study

You've also got two adjectives:

Studious and studied

Another noun:

Studies

And an adverb:

Studiously.

That can't be true, surely? We don't have adverbs any more?

What did they do, ban all the adverby words?

Tal, tell him, go on.

It's an American thing for the most part that has been adopted wholesale by marketing people. They are as rare as hen's teeth these days.

We play different from 888 is a good example.

Stephen King is famously not a fan http://www.brainpickings.org/2013/03/13/stephen-king-on-adverbs/

But I personally miss them. There is a train announcement where it asks people to report "anything suspicious or anyone acting suspiciously" that gives me a warm feeling inside.

".....I believe the road to hell is paved with adverbs....."

!

That's all a bit too subtle for me.

One trend I've noticed much more of late is how we are changing the way we use some words.

I keep seeing....

We had a very fun evening

It was very fun

Can't quite read such stuff without uttering a little harumph. It sucks being so old school & set in my ways. But I quite enjoy seeing it in a weird way.

Which word would you have chosen before 'sucks' became fashionable?

That doesn't half sound like an old man trying to look cool.

I just think we lose so much subtlety without adverbs. As a stylistic thing for certain types of writing then sure, she walks slow or he runs quick makes more sense.

But there is more than one style of writing isn't there?

BOOM!

Perhaps I made "sucks" fashionable long before it was in vogue?

Seruiously, as I wrote the sentence, I could not think of a more apt word. It seemed very fun to me.

Saw an article in a newspaper today with the following headline (or something similar):

Mum of two spends more on doll than her children
.

That, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, is why we need better education on English.

No idea why, but that reminded me of this.....
