100 yards south of Piccadilly & running parallel, is Jermyn Street. In fact you can enter stores like Fortnum & Mason or Waterstones from Piccadilly & leave via Jermyn Street.

And it was in Jermyn Street we found this wonderful old cheese shop. That's all it sells - cheese. And don't bother asking for any Dairylea Slices. We did once buy some dreadfully smelly cheese there, just to pretend we were posh I suppose.

By chance I noticed this oddity today. I read Roy's book many years ago & it's a fun read, though I've not read Mr Sexton's one.

The thread included this shop which only sold clothing & accessories for sailors. It's in Central London.

Given the cost of your average yacht and the costs of ownership then wouldn't the centre of London be where many of the owners work?

They do seem to have moved online, and though I only dream of buying a yacht, it looks like just the sort of site I could waste a good hour or two.  I could probably spend half that just analysing the team photo below.

Twitter can be so toxic, & I suppose that reflects the world we live in, with so many isms. Racism, sexism, croneyism & God knows what else. Within it though, if you look hard enough, there are little pockets of wonderful stuff.

The kids must think I've gone doolally, & they may be right, but I spent a whole hour perusing a Twitter thread about an umbrella shop yesterday. And it was the most enjoyable hour I had all day. It started off with an umbrella shop & wandered off naturally into all sorts of odd byways.

My favourite leisure activity is reading books, & books are my most treasured possessions. A good Twitter thread is not far behind though.

WARNING - don't bother reading this Twitter thread unless you are a bit cranky - there's nothing exciting to see.

love this shop, its the place to go if you want a good quality umbrella, walking stick, shooting stick or walking stick. All are tailored in house to your height so it fits perfectly for you.

Here for your walking stick or herd's crook or thumb stick for the fishermen you go to Auld Geordie's hut where he makes them & he fits them to you there. I know the techniques but haven't the skill or patience to justify the expenditure on equipment.

Also round there is the extraordinary shoe-maker, Jeffery West:

Something between heyday Peter O'Toole and peak-flamboyance Paul Parker.

Very well made shoes. I've had a pair of dress shoes from them for 20 years. A bit like Trigger's broom, they've not got their original sole, but the quality is superb.

Paul Parker. What a blast from the past.

Has anyone ever seen him without a glass of red?

I was left thinking how do kids learn to be so conservative at the age of 9.   DON'T DO IT.

I'm suddenly reminded of two of my own personal favourite shops.

Not because I buy stuff from them, I absolutely do not, but pre-COVID when Gill & I used to go rambling around the West End, we would often pass this shop on Piccadilly. It only sold one thing - mustard. I SO wish I liked mustard.

I'm a mustard fan and I had no idea Maille had a shop of their own. I'm an even bigger fan of that shop front though, it's glorious!

With the snooker coming to a climax this weekend, I'm suddenly reminded of the 1980 renewal, 41 years ago, when TV coverage was interrupted to bring us breaking news of the SAS storming the Iranian embassy. What a story.

My memory of it all is a but flaky, but I certainly recall that all the hostages who were still alive were rescued safe & well, but every single one of the bad guys was shot & killed by the SAS, which saved all manner of difficult consequences further down the line.

Oh, & Cliff Thorburn beat Alex Higgins 18-16.

Oh, & Cliff Thorburn beat Alex Higgins 18-16.

Cliff won the princely sum of £15,000 that year.
