Heard from Raj today, many of you will remember him as the rather superb Cardroom Supervisor/TD at The Broadway until quite recently.
He wrote to thank me for this & that.
Anyway, he's just back from India, where he got married, & says he's the happiest man on earth. Delighted for him, I like him muchly, as a person, and a very fine TD, one of the very best in the UK.
He's left The Broadway, & he's now got a job at Grosvenor Birmingham, which does not currently have a Card-Room. But I gather plans are afoot to have a card-room there soon enough.
Let's hope so, Raj is too good a TD for British poker to lose, and we are thin on the ground for good TD's - it's hard to think of 6 really decent TD's in the UK, & one of those is currently unable to work. (Yogi). Gala even imported Thomas Kremser for the GBPT, which says it all. Fancy having to get an Austrian TD (superb as he undoubtedly is) for a British Event!

I wandered into The Western on Tuesday, & there, sticking out like a sore thumb, was a very smartly dressed ex-Military type. Tall, with brown oxford brogues, beautifully creased chinos & linen jacket, lime green silk tie, very good posture, clearly ex-Officer type. If ever anyone looked like a Tory MP, it was this chappie.
Jeff, he of The Western, immediately introduced me to said individual, & indeed, he was a Tory MP - none other than The Hon Tobias Ellwood, the Shadow Minister responsible for Gaming, and Conservative Member of Parliament for Bournemouth East.
Presumably, he was at The Western as part of their PCA initiative (PCA being essentially led by The Western & Gutshot) for "unlicensed" clubs. I think this is called "lobbying". You know the thing, "Look how wonderful everything here is". "Yes, you are so right, these seem like jolly decent chaps"........
So we engaged in polite chit-chat before moving onto the ramifications for the new Gaming Act, 2005, effective 1st September this year. As chance would have it, I'd been to a simply superb seminar on exactly that earlier in the afternoon, being the very reason I was in London straight after a heavy weekend in Luton.
I started to discuss the Act with him, using DTD as an example, & Online International juristiction as it applies to the Act, as well as B & M, & it soon became clear he had not, as they say, "read his brief". What?
Our ability to play poker in decent conditions & reasonably protected by Law rests with guys like Tobias.
I was sorely tempted to try the "do you know who I am?" line. But fearing a negative, I decided it was best not to even attempt humour, & bade my farewell.
"Poker, is that where a run beats a straight?".....I kid you not.

Fortunately, it's not him who will be making the decisions - well not at the moment anyway.

This week's Poker Account
Work has meant very little poker this week, just 2 Live Tourneys. Online, 1 Tourney & one hour of $3-$6 Omaha Cash.
Online Tourneys
- Lost $250.
Online Cash
- Won $630.
So a small profit there, call it £200.
Live
The Western £100 Freezeout, Tuesday, cost £100, return Nil.
Luton, £50 + £50 Single Rebuy, Wednesday, cost £100, return £330, profit £230.
So a Live Profit of £130 & an Online Profit of £200, = £330. Deduct travel & Reg Fees, call it £250 profit.
Now comes the odd bit.
At Luton on Wednesday, I had a £50 Last Longer with Chopper Flush. The outcome of that was not hard to predict, he's useless away from Brighton, so that's £50 Profit.
I was also part of a 15 man £20 Last Longer. Incredibly, when there were 5 of us left in the LL, we decided to chop it, so 5 of us took £60 each! £40 Profit.
I swapped 10% with Chili at Luton, so that's £33 off the profit.
So I end up about £307 in Profit. Small beer to some, but it'll do for me, thank you very much, & the Bankroll survives another week intact.

Been an odd week for me Diary-wise. Worked all weekend & Monday at Luton, & went to a Seminar at Sky on Tuesday about the Gaming Act, 2005. A meet in Leeds yesterday took up most of the day.
Tonight, I do the Sky Show, & then I fly out with Compo to Barcelona from Stansted (Stansted, when I live 10 minutes from East Mids!, but it beats Luton I guess) at 0700 tomorrow (Saturday) morning, to Barcelona for Poker Week, & we fly back into Stansted at around Midnight on Sunday. On Monday morning, fresh as a daisy (one assumes), I am up in Bolton with a Poker Week Cameraman to do an in-depth inteview with Jon "skalie" Kalmar.
Tuesday & Wednesday I'm "resting", then I do the Sky Show 3 nights in 4, (Thursday, Saturday & Sunday), & from Thursday I'm also on daily "Standby" for Poker Week Duties at the WSOP-E, where we hope to grab some decent interviews.
So not much Poker next week, either. I am gonna try & pop down to Plymouth on Tuesday for the £300 Double Chance Freezeout. (Is that a 1 or 2 dayer, anyone know?). I won't play Wednesday's £250 Omaha in Plymouth, much as I'd fancy my chances, as it's a Rebuy, & I refuse to play Omaha Rebuys. Omaha Rebuys destroyed Omaha Comps on the Circuit, so I'm kinda sad this is a Rebuy, when we have so few Omaha jobbies. So it'll be Luton on Wednesday night for the £50 + £50 jobbie. God Bless Luton.
I made a right mess of yesterday's appointment in Leeds. It was a friend & poker business colleague of long-standing, & he wants some help with a very special series of poker events he's gonna stage, private VIP jobbies. His e-Mail said "why not come up to Leeds for Dinner, I can meet you off the train". So I got there about 1.30pm, & there it all went a bit embarrassing, after I rung him "where are you?".
"I said Dinner, not Lunch" says he, apparently not expecting me until 8pm.......
Jeez, why DO posh peeps call evening meal "Dinner"? Dinner is Dinnertime ffs. Breakfast, Dinner, Tea, Supper was how it used to work, but now "Dinner" is Evening. Oh to be posh.
