So how does one compare reading poker hand analysis threads to reading poker books?

Tikay, only just found this diary, n1, its quality. I also want to say that whilst i think you are a legend, your view on poker books is shocking. I like tightends response about them being part of a well-balanced poker diet lol.

I hate poker books. Alex Martin and Tightend talk poo poo

It's not like us to disagree!  Wink I think books have their place and I also enjoy reading Alex's comments. 1 out of 3 is not bad for us

It was a very good question whoever asked it ...... all I know is that books helped me towards my biggest ever win.

I've read a few books, mainly to get the basics of a new game such as Razz or 2-7. I then find that the rest of the information in the book useful in as a  general over view of the game, it can give you a feel for certain specific situations until you become more experienced at that particular form of poker.

The great thing about the hand analysis thread is that unlike books everything is very situational. There could be 2 threads saying did i play QQ correctly, and because of different blind levels, buy in or position you will get very different advice on two quite similar hands.

Keep up the diary Tikay it's a great read and sparks of some good debate along the way. thumbs up

So how does one compare reading poker hand analysis threads to reading poker books?

Well, for starters, I cant read those Hand Histories they Post, I just cannot absorb them, 95% of the info is not needed but it clutters up the real info.

But the Hand Analysis Thread is something I DO read a lot, but mostly for entertainment rather than learning I think.

I mashed a hand in Luton a while back, Posted it here, & learnt a great deal, it's fair to say.

I think the difference is that PHA on blonde is REAL hands in REAL situations. But we all play different, so it's tough to take on someome else's thinking, because my game is probably wholly different to theirs.

Say, for example, Thewy posted a hand. I don't have Thewy's style, never will have, so it's no good me trying to copy him, even if he is a far better player, which he clearly is. We are what we are, & we cannot adapt other people's games to our own, we play poker the way we live. I am cautious, wary of danger, & not very brave, entirely the opposite to Thewy, so his moves are no good to me.

24 hours is a very long time in poker.

I came home peeved with myself last night because I'd played that hand so awfully bad. More importantly, I'd done £275, & would need to be playing catch-up poker all week - I guard my Bankroll with my life.

And then I went & luckboxed a win in the $250 on Laddies this afternoon, nicking $3,000, fior a profit of $2,750, let's call it £1,350. So whatever happens, I'm in profit for this week, & it's only Tuesday. A lovely feeling. Oh, I forgot, I swapped 20% with Compo, so I owe him $600, call it £300. I can't complain. The first time in my life I ever swapped 20% with anyone was with Compo in Vegas - & he luckboxed $13,000......! He deserves it though - Spurs supporter, you know.

Work & non-poker private stuff means that in probability, I can only play one more comp this week, the £75 Freeze at Luton on Friday, so the profit is locked up.

I was tinkering with the idea of going to The Broadway tonight, but the $250 dragged on a bit, & it's too late now. Some of these guys don't 'arf play tight when Heads Up, eh?

My word, I did Luckbox it though. Thanks to all the Railers by the way, Kev, Compo, ITB, & Rooks. Your encouragement "lolol", "luckbox", "fish", "tikay 9/1 to bubble" make all the difference. Kev's was best - "he'll die before this finishes if he don't hurry up".....Wink

I look on PHA as lots of different peoples books put up on one thread. I have read a couple of books, but not for the last couple of years, I take some of the hands in them to be ones that we will all come across at some point, just like PHA, so much to learn and  2 dealt cards will and can be played in so many different ways but  always good to see how individual players look and play with them differently. So it must be to me personally that the PHA is not really a lot different than reading a book. We all will never stop learnig where poker is concerned, it's like not allowing complacency to set in.

I take your point Maureen, but as Bone said, PHA is MUCH more situational than books can ever be. And anyway, I'm stubborn.....Wink

Fair enough, i know we are all going to have different opinions! But i have never, and dont see why i will ever, pick up a poker book to learn from.

Read them to understand how others will play having read them then. Wink

I'm struggling to come to terms with tightend and well-balanced diet in the same sentence  Roll Eyes

Well as they all read pretty much the same books, I've already got there. I can read those sort of players all day & night, it's the unconventional ones that give me problems. In any event, it's mainly about MY hand, not theirs, & position, & spotting openigs. When did a book ever teach you how to spot "soft" pots, given that the dynamics of a soft pot can be so many different things?
