I know I am not a very good poker player by any stretch of the imagination -(I am getting better) but I just adore the game. I am not one for reading books but the best way I feel I am getting better (quote Tikay) is by losing, its very educational. I do win the odd bit of money but my bankroll is fairly static and to me that is OK cos I love playing. Live play to me is fascinating and I learn more by watching and listening than I ever could from a book.

And I am starting to lose less (or at least not lose by my own mistakes) so heres to education, education, education.............

I look on PHA as lots of different peoples books put up on one thread. I have read a couple of books, but not for the last couple of years, I take some of the hands in them to be ones that we will all come across at some point, just like PHA, so much to learn and  2 dealt cards will and can be played in so many different ways but  always good to see how individual players look and play with them differently. So it must be to me personally that the PHA is not really a lot different than reading a book. We all will never stop learnig where poker is concerned, it's like not allowing complacency to set in.

Exactly.

Some people seem to be suggesting that you can either play and do your own thinking and analysis and work out the best way to play by yourself,
or,
you can read books and do exactly what they suggest.

Doesn't it make more sense to play and do your own thinking and analysis and read books and absorb their opinions and analysis - and use all that information to work out the best way for you to play?

His train pass was the first one ever given out by Great Western Railway, when they celebrated their 20th year.

My word, I did Luckbox it though. Thanks to all the Railers by the way, Kev, Compo, ITB, & Rooks. Your encouragement "lolol", "luckbox", "fish", "tikay 9/1 to bubble" make all the difference. Kev's was best - "he'll die before this finishes if he don't hurry up".....Wink

Reading poker books is beneficial to build up a wide general knowledge of the subject. Even if reading a book re-affirms your decision to play a different way it is a worthwhile exercise.

I think the trick is having your own original thoughts and developing that aspect of your individual game whilst still having a thorough knowledge of a more traditional style. This way the book doesn't lead you. All the information you consume, from whatever source that may be, allows you to understand general poker logic and that is a good thing.

However, and most importantly, a book can't tell you how a single individual is thinking on any particular day. This is where the PHA Board has a massive advantage over books. A book will reveal how the author thinks. PHA is inter-active and gives you a broad cross-section of opinion from different types of players. This allows you to cultivate an over-view of the tendancies of a whole group rather than just one person.

The most interesting thing about poker "theory" though is how it can quickly dissapear when actually playing the game.

This is why being switched on and trying to tap into another players thought process on any given day is where the crux of the game actually lies....and that can't be learnt from a book.

OOP? At this stage, BIN, quick.

Later in the comp, same hand, same pos - BIN.

Early doors, I'm gonna be Sponge Bob, soaking up info, watching tricks, see who's dancing, where we gonna get our chips from, who can be pushed around, who's the Albert who can't Pass. Once we done that, we can get started. Like, 2 hours in.

THEORY: Avoid playing A-J, especially early as you wanna be sitting back and soaking up the info about who's dancin!!
