We filmed at the Guinness Factory in Dublin on Sunday morning, & what a place that is. I've boned up on it since, & it's not only Dublin's biggest Tourist attration (measured by Visitors) but Ireland's, too, with over a million visitors annually. And look out for the weirdest "top of the Show" link Poker Week have ever done. Bet NOBODY can guess which world-famous Film-Star I do an "impression" of. My money is safe, unless someone let's the cat out of the bag......(There's a clue for you).
Anyway, I'm so gob-smacked by the Guinness factory thing that I buy a book about it at Dublin Airport, (where I was stranded for 12 hours, did I mention that?.....) but it was a bit sychophantic & toshy. But I wanted to check out one specific fact, & it gave me that.
There's a plaque in the floor of the Guinness Factory that has a fascimile of the original Lease on the Factory, signed by Arthur Guinness in 1759. The Lease was for.......9,000 years!
The book states this as correct, & that the annual Lease costs, can you believe, (& remember, it occupies a HUGE & extremely valuable tract of land) £10 a year! £10 a year, it must be worth a bloody fortune. Oh the down side, it expires in the year 10,759. Ah well, only 8,752 years to go. Bet there'll be an Upward Revision in 10,759 though.

Eventually, after a typical traffic-thronged trip to the Airport along Dublin's quite dreadful roads, we approach the Airport. "Got the answer yet boys?" says Cabbie-Man. Yup, lies Compo, "I think it's Carberry".
"Unlucky" says Cabbie-Man, "it's Richard Hughes". So we have to pay the €40 fare.
As we stand by the Airport Terminal & the Taxi drives away, Compo goes mad. "I texted my mate & he sent me the wrong bloody answer".....
i just looked this up, because I was convinced that Paul Carberry was the answer - in fact I would have put a large wager on carberry being the right answer.
of course it was Richard Hughes...

I think it was a semi-trick question Laz, because Compo thought it was Carberrry, too, before realising the error, & why. Cabbie-Man has, it seems, won many bets with the same question.

Compo & I arrived in Dublin at around 7pm on Saturday night, a quick cab-ride to the Hotel, shower & change, then off to the RDS to film stuff. We film until nearly midnight, say good night to snoops & Chili, & head back to the Hotel. "Let's go to The Fitzwilliam for some cash-action" says Compo to me & Chili, but we are meeting at 9am Sunday to film some stuff, & I've been travelling all day, & I'm not up for it.
We get back to our Hotel, "night Compo" I say, "nooooooo" says he, but I stood firm, "sorry, I'm too tired mate, I'm off to bed".
5 minutes later, we are in a cab to The Fitz, damn him, & when we arrive, Chili is there already, at the table playing!
We soon find a table, it's a €200 sit down I think, & I'm soon pulling up again after Compo makes a shocking call with 2-2 when he's obviously behind, but he gets lucky. When I say "he's behind", I'm speaking technically, of course, and although I'm technically behind, I'm something like 107% favourite.
Soon, I'm on my third pull-up, & I'm in for €680......but remember Luton, on Friday night, when I could not catch a card, & was £1,500 down before my luck turned? Well, it was payback time now, & how. I hit everything in sight & eventually cashed in for €1,450 I think. and I'm more convinced than ever that the luck factor in poker is higher than most folks think. And to a large degree, it's not your hand that matters, it's the other fellas hand that does the damage.
I began with
, & bet out on the
flop, & got smooth-called. How was I to know he was holding the floptastic A-K? Running spades later, I'm scooping,. & AK man is open-mouthed. "How could you?........".
Then, strangely, Q-4 again, this time v AA, but what am I to do on a 3-5-6 flop? The two arrived with a card to spare.....
Then it was 4-4, & plenty of action pre, but I just KNEW I'd flop my set, & I did, on a 8-4-3 jobbie. I housed up on the 8 turn, &, and this is the thing, this is where the luck REALLY is, my oppo was holding an 8, so no escape for the poor fella.
Matey-Boy then runs a bluff on me with 10 high, & I make a huge call with 2nd pair, correctly, & he stomps off with the hump.
Then, & I know not why, but I Raise it up with 2-4 & flop my undercard, & bet out, thinking I might nick it, but get action. I turn the 4 for 2 pair, now I'm liking it, especially against my oppo who held A-Q & guess what rivered - yup, the Q. Bingo. Almost literally.
Finally, I need to sort Compo out after his 2-2 shocker, I'd warned him I would, & I was hunting for him big time. He Raises my BB, & I've got the guaranteed-to-be-ahead
. Well it was for sure after the third heart Turned, & the Board came 9 high, he had no escape with his pile of poo. That's his J-J pile of poo. Happy days. Compo ended a few hundred up, as did Chili, & we shared a cab back to our respective Hotels, happy souls all three of us. Little knowing the torrid 12 hours ahead of me at Dublin Airport.....Did I mention that before?

Nobody even remotely close to the Film-Star Impression, & I'm late, I need to get on my bike, I am Luton-bound. And late again, damn.

me
and for those questioning my film star credentials you are obviously blissfully ignorant of my touching performance as "man-made-to-look-like-donkey-by-pretty-girl" in channel 4's balls of steel.
PS love reading the diary tikay. Keep it up - best blog around imo.
