I had a smashing chat with
Julian
Gardner
last Saturday in Dublin.
For those new to the game, Julian is, arguably, one of the UK's finest Tournament players. He's had 15 or 20 WSOP Cashes, including a 10th in the $10,000 Omaha, & 3 or 4 Main Event Cashes, the best being runner-up for $1,100,000 in the famous 2002 Main Event, the so-called "Shipley Final". Legend has it that he took the $1.1mill in Cash, paid for an extra seat on the flight home to Manchester, & plonked the holdall with all that cash in it next to him on the 'plane, with it's own seat. Julian used to do the European Circuit, has dozens of cashes at the Aviation in Paris, also Vienna, Nova Gorcia, everywhere really.
He's been hooked up with THE prettiest young lady you ever saw for some years now - Jerry I think - & they have two beautiful young daughters. Or it may be one of each. The eldest - or it may be the youngest - is three. Or possibly older. Or younger
.
It's Kerry....and you seem to have missed out a vital part of the story!!!!

I like the Western, it's always good fun there. I only play the £20/£30 freezeouts but they are great fun and get a good crowd. They seem to often do things like give free bar drinks, bottles of bubbly to the CL's of the last two tables etc. If there's only a few women players, they sometimes put bounties on them but also offer them £100 extra if they make the FT too - this is even in my level of buy in.
Great venue to play in my opinion.
Not sure what happened to the Gutshot thing (why would I know I guess). They did install the online poker room for the Gutshot a bit back alongside the FT tables but I don't think they have it there anymore.
The big game used to take place in the main poker room which was good to watch sometimes. I haven't watched many cash games, but I don't think I've ever seen so much cash at one table (live) as is usually on there. Wonder if they moved it upstairs to get away from all the tourney players standing and watching.

Those Western "Christmas Comp". details as I understand it:
: 2 day freezeout: £750 + £50 on 22/23 Dec. 7pm kick off.
10,000 chips 45 min levels. (no news on what levels are in or out!)
Festive Buffet each day!
Satellites live at the club and on Full Tilt.
Sounds good to me, and I agree its a well run enjoyable place.......I just wish we could get this licence/unlicence/members club/certain poker stake limits/fishing club stuff sorted out!!.

Today's issue of "The Economist" carries an advert for a "Horizon Scanner", with a salary of £62,000 per year.
The successful applicant would work for the Government's "Horizon Scanning Centre", which in itself is part of Labour's "Foresight" Initiative.
I suppose it would be cynical to even suggest that this daft idea was dreamed up by a PR Compny or an ad Agency, perish the thought.
Here's what Foresight say about Horizon Scanning.
In its Science and Innovation Investment Framework 2004-2014, the Government committed to establishing a Centre of Excellence in Horizon Scanning, to be based in the Foresight directorate of the Government Office for Science. Work on establishing the Centre started in November 2004. Its output is feeding directly into cross-government priority-setting and strategy formation. The work of the Centre is strongly informed by the science base and by the best of existing work in Government, the private sector and elsewhere.
And.....
The HSC covers a wide range of activities. Examples of our work include the following:
Strategic Horizon Scans: two complementary scans looking ahead up to 50 years. The Sigma Scan covers future issues and trends across the full public policy agenda. The Delta Scan is an overview of future science and technology issues and trends
Wider Implications of Science and Technology (WIST): an expert and stakeholder appraisal combined with a public-facing engagement process, to explore the wider implications of new and emerging areas of science and technology.
FAN Club: the Futures’ Analysts Network. The FAN Club is a forum where those who have an interest in horizon scanning and futures analysis can meet to exchange new ideas, innovative thinking and good practice. Meetings, which are open to all, are held four times a year.
Good Practice: we have published a toolkit is based on the work of the Foresight programme since 2002.

So there you are, marvellous.
Imagine what fun these Horizon Scanners must have.
"What you got on in the office today Dear?"
"Oh, we are very busy this weerk, looking 50 years into the future".
Marvellous. Our Tax pays for this bloody tosh!

wow the government can look 50 years into the future? Maybe that's why Tony said "Judge me in 50 years time on the war in Iraq"..he surely knew it was gonna be a mess but in the long run it's all for the best....a sodding genius he is!
BTW..why would anyone who can look 50 years into the future take a 62k a year job?..surely he'd be worth MUCH more than that?

It'd take the successful applicant 50 years to understand all the acronyms involved in the job.
