A random view of the Arboretum. I suppose it seems geekish to some, but did you know there is such a thing as a "British Tree Register"? No, I thought not, who would? Well, Thorp Perrow has 27 "Champion Trees" - more than any single site in the UK.

The Arboretum was founded by Sir Leonard Ropner, & after his death in the 70's, his Son, Sir John Ropner, took over the stewardship.

It really is worth a visit if you are into trees, birds, all things nature, they even have a mammal house.

Here's a note by Sir John from their website, & I can almost sense this is a lovely man, just by his writing.....

My father, Sir Leonard, was 32 years old when the estate was bought and it was very soon afterwards that the planning and planting of the Arboretum began. I have no idea where this great love for trees came from - I often joke that I wish he had collected French impressionist pictures! But no such luck.

I think that one of the nicest things about Thorp Perrow Arboretum is its slightly 'amateurish' atmosphere. It was after all designed and cared for by a man with no previous arboricultural experience - and this I may say remains the case today!

The Arboretum was my father's 'Secret Garden' - he was extremely proud of it but towards the end of his life it had become sadly neglected. Upon his death in 1977 I was faced with the problem of what to do with these 85 acres. I asked Alan Mitchell, (the famous dendrologist), to come and advise, and when he re-emerged from the jungle he said in no uncertain terms that the collection should be preserved at all costs. Financial help was required and we were fortunate to get a grant from the Ministry of the Environment - on the condition (quite rightly!) that the Arboretum should be open to the public. The rest, as they say, is history. Much sweat and toil with invaluable advice from several Curators has produced what you will find today.

The Website is here.....

They are lovely Rooks, thank you. Do you think the animals are kept in "reasonale" conditions - I suppose I mean, do you approve of Zoos?

I was not aware you were such an animal-lover.

PS - How do you Upload more than one picture per Post?

I've got some good pics of birds from travels around various parts of Africa, I'll try and post some over the weekend if I can but I think most of the file sizes might be too big to post.

I was not aware you were such an animal's.

Not such an animal lover - what made you think that? I have two greyhounds, live half the time with 2 cats and the other half with another dog! I love animals, I think they are amazing, and would own one of every kind if i could!

I don't know really, this zoo is supposed to rescue animals and home them. It's run on a charity basis i believe. So in this case I probably approve of them. They seemed to be looked after well, all happy, all moving, plenty of space!

And finally, when you have clicked to upload your first picture just click 'more attachments' right next to it and it will open another box up. Max 500kb of pictures per post.
