I'm with you on the Rebecca Adlington stuff, but, to be fair, I don't think the you tube mock-up was intended to be a piss-take of her (it didn't come across that way to me anyway).  The original post on that thread commented that JP thought she was cute, and the video montage showed them together, which I thought was quite clever - nothing mocking there as far as I can see.

Respect for others? Yes, Women have more respect these days. Firemen & Ambulance personnel don't though - they regularly get physically attacked simply because they represent authority.

See, I don't think they get attacked because they represent authority at all. I think they get attacked because the kids and louts that attack them don't get the shit beaten out of them when they do.

I am pretty sure that if you threw a rock at a fireman in the olden days someone would have "sorted you out"..the sorting out business is lacking now and there are more assholes because of it.

You misread my Post. I said....

Which clearly implies some for the better, some not so. You've assumed, from the gist of your replies, I meant all for the worse.

It wasn't this post in isolation.  There's a constant theme of 'it was better in the good old days' on this thread.

Yes, the standard of living is better for most of the UK population. Financially, that is.......

Access to healthcare is better, unemployment is lower, working and living conditions are far better, and of course, financially people are better off overall.  Where is the standard of living worse for the vast majority?

It's disgusting and abhorrent.  Don't think its a reflection on whole of society though.  It just shows there are some idiots about who need to be locked up.

TV being available 24/7 = more choice? Think wider, Daniel. The free availability of 24/7 TV has destroyed more lives than you can ever imagine. Folks base their whole lives around it. Kids watch it from the age of 3, & their minds become polluted by it's images. Life without TV is not the tragedy most think it is. Try going a week, or a month, without TV. You'd be amazed how refreshing it is. But you can watch Sky Poker.

Choice.  You don't have to watch TV.  But you can if you want, and when you want to - you have choice!  I don't see a problem with children watching TV from the age of 3?  Not for 12 hours a day, but like all things, in moderation.  Just as long as they don't watch Sky Poker.

The Internet - yes, such a juxtaposition of good & evil. Truly awesome.

Rebecca wouldn't have been able to train like she did without 4-years of lottery funding.  She isn't from a wealthy family, and very often in the 'good old days' the only ones who could succeed were the ones who had funding from whatever means possible, otherwise they'd have to work instead.

It's neither wholly better, nor wholly worse. But on balance, society is worse. IMO.

People don't 'sort thugs out' these days because they'll likely end up behind bars for their efforts.  At the very least, they'll be forced to pay a nice chunk of compensation to said thug for their injuries. 

When I was growing up, we knew all the neighbours within a mile or more of our house.  If we were playing away from home and one of us got a cut, we'd just go to the nearest house and they'd clean and bandage the cut.  We'd be given a glass of milk and a cookie before we were sent on our way with a word of 'Thanks' before we departed.  They knew us and we knew them.

Today...in most places, people don't even know their neighbours.  Kids can't go to their door for fear there might be a perv on the other side.  If, by some chance, they find a genuinely concerned neighbour, the neighbour can't touch the wound for fear of being sued for improper medical treatment.  We've tossed ourselves into a Catch 22 with no way out. 

Luckily, where we live now is still a bit like the old days...but I wonder how long it will last before we catch up with the rest.
