So, Hellmuth has a set against a straight draw making him a 74% favourite in a $208,300 pot. In order to reduce variance he sidebets $30,000 with resident bookie Eli Elezra that the opposing player completes their straight. Eli agrees to lay him 2.6 - 1 when true odds would be 2.85 - 1. Am I the only one who cracks up when hellmuth gives away up to 10% juice (7% on this occasion) every time he makes these insurance props on high stakes poker and other televised stuff. For a player of his class the outcome of any one hand should be irrelevant. Everyone else seems content to deal twice to reduce variance.

Yes hellmuth is a donk for offering these bets, basically he hates varience and will make these bets to combat it. Im sure Eli and Phil Ivey love his action.

It made me laugh that none of them could work out the odds in that hand. Hilarious.

indeed..over the long run it's a bad idea simple as that. Hellmuth will probably say something along the lines of "F Variance I am here to make money"..without actually realising he's actually losing money doing this.

He did this on the FT of one of the WSOP events this year.  TBH, I really don't like it and think it gives the other person a disadvantage because all the action is the on Phil being all big mouthed and the other guy has to sit, hold his poker face and wait.

pretty disgraceful imo.  could you imagine phil's reaction if he got it all in behind and his opponent is walking round asking for prices and telling the dealer to wait.
