I was playing .50/1 Omaha cash when I saw the wife driving down the road returning from a trip to Sainsbury’s. Being the dutiful husband I popped my head out the door and said leave the shopping I will bring it in. She took over my game (which means a + move in the hourly expectation) and I unload the shopping and the wife says “that’s a bit funny”. The software says she is being ejected from the table for missing 10 rounds, weird as she is  actually in a pot a the time and it then times her out and checks all the way to the river. Her opponent hits a gut shot on the river but it’s a tiny pots as he only had .50 cents left anyway so she’s not too concerned. It was only the wife and one other player at the table and she had (virtually) felted this player whilst I was putting the shopping away!

The screen freezes and we can’t cancel it from task manager so end up having to reboot, after multiple failures we finally mange to reconnect, a good 15 minutes later. When I log in I see the balance of my account zero, nada, Zip. I didn’t have much on the site when I logged in for first time today, probable only $40 or $50 but a having stacked the other player at the table the account balance should have been about $60-$70. I hunt around and find the table I had been sitting at prior to disconnection and discover that I have been posting the blinds and folding to raises to another player for the entire length of my disconnection period (not the same player the wife/I where playing prior to the blip). There was about $30 left in front of me, so I think $30+ has been stolen.

I won’t mention the site as I have emailed there support and will wait to see how they try to resolve the matter before getting my knickers in a twist, and im not that bothered about $30 anyway but of course there is a principle involved. What’s concerning me is my own morality, I have played in many heads-up sit and go’s and have either been disconnected myself or my opponent has. When my opponent gets disconnected I do try to get as many chips off them as I can before they reconnect, I have never had any moral problem with this. And when I get disconnected I never get to concerned its just one of those things.

I mean I can’t sit there all day waiting for him to sign back on and I don’t expect others to do this for me. And if I do try to make it fair and fold back to him by the time he gets returns(if he indeed does return) the whole structure will be shooty and that’s not what I paid for. Now for the cash game incident I honestly don’t think I would have sat there stealing from another player who I could see was automatically posting blinds. I really do think I would have sat out and contacted support because to me it’s just to close to actual theft to be morally comfortable with it.

Now this has happened to me in cash game it has forced me to look at my own moral stand point on this. I don’t play much cash because it has always seemed much to like gambling for me and the nature of tournaments has always appealed much more as a competition rather than naked gambling. It is all gambling, im not naive enough to think otherwise I just find tournament a more acceptable form which might be why I can accept what would happen as a sit and go as just one of those things but in cash find it reprehensible.

Am I being hypocritical? I’m feeling a little uncomfortable about my stand point on head up sit and go’s now and would really appreciate other player’s thoughts on this.

On all sites I play on in cash, if i disconnect or miss a hand and get timed out I am placed in sit out mode. If I click the "I am Back" button I am forced to post the blinds or wait until the button passes me. I can't think of any site that would continue to "rob" your blinds. If I did encounter a site like that, I wouldn't play it anymore ..... Tournaments with no disconnect protection are different as you have already posted a set amount and you are warned of this beforehand.

This has also happened to me - and when I eventually got back in I couldnt even see the table for a while then it suddenly popped up.  I wonder if it was the same site?  I didn't email in though as there was hardly any money on the table and being new I just assumed this was the norm.

Like the others have said, in a cash game if you fail to act in the time limit it should 'sit you out' and you will no longer post any blinds.  This is to protect you as much as it's to keep the game moving for other players.

I wouldn't play cash on a site that allowed that to happen.  It's certainly not ipoker or stars.  I know you said that you didn't want to name them until they had a chance to respond to your email, but I'd be very interested to know which site this is and I think you should name them to spare others on here from the same fate.

If you don't want to do that, could you PM me the site, just so I make sure I don't play cash on there.  I won't tell a soul which site it is if you want it to remain a secret until they get back to you.

I'm guessing Party Poker? Sounds like a bug, hopefully you will get your money back.

As far as heads up sng's are concerned, if your opponent disconnects just take all their chips with a clear conscience, 99%+ of opponents won't wait for you the times you disconnect.

I don't think you are necessarily being hypocritical - there is a difference between you nicking a few blinds in a SNG, and what happened in this instance.

However, personally I would normally give someone reasonable time to reconnect if they disconnected in a HU SNG, and fold my SB for a few rounds.
It just doesn't feel right, in a one on one situation, to win by taking advantage in this way.

I agree...In a cash game I would even consider it stealing.

It's not the other players fault, it's the site's fault. How does he even know that you are not connected? You might just be too tight for your own good.

When you disconnect you should be sat out, you should not be posting blinds. I would like to know what site it is as I feel this has happened to me on a smaller scale but I can't remember which site.

Are you certain that it took that much money from you?

If you were not 'sat out' then it should give you your full 30seconds to act before folding you. How long before you restarted and got reconnected? There is only so many blinds that could be stolen in this time.

As the software was crashed and your PC was still on, it could think you are still connected and be timing you out and still posting. Once you restarts it should sit you out. Maybe you were just blinded in the time that the software was crashed and you were still connected to the internet and before you restarted.
