Evil, nasty things

four questions

1 Should one feed them bread? I gather it affects their stomachs, health wise not gut wise

2. When they waddle towards you pleading for bread might they nip you?

3. Is it entirely sensible to be ever so slightly afraid of geese?

4. How come they can walk upstairs but not downstairs?

1. I think they might be like seagulls and explode if you feed them bread so I guess the answer depends on whether you like geese or not

2. Absolutely. In Ukraine they live in packs on the street and they have a go at our cars as we drive past so will definitely take your ankles. They're especially dangerous when they have a new brood of chicks who they'll die to protect from people.

3. Probably.

4. Once again, that's daleks

1, White is fine, Brown bread is not so good but NEVER malted bread as it reacts with their stomach acid and can rupture the stomach.

2, Only by accident when they are being over enthusiastic feeders.

3, NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER IS IT ACCEPTABLE TO BE AFRAID OF GEESE.

4, Because they would FLY downstairs.

Never ever give a bird baking powder - as they fly upwards they will explode. Fact. (It's a long story)

1) Nonsense. With all due respect.

2) Have a gander at Kev's reply.

3) Yes. In many parts of Africa, Geese are kept as guard "dogs", though for the most part, it's the noise they make which acts as the deterrent.

4) Nonsense. With all due respect.

Yep, Geese are kept as Guard "dogs" all over the world.  It's not just the angry sound they emit but those beating wings, flapping feet and that darting beak are dangerous weapons when they are defending territory - seriously - they are scarey creatures too.

"Farmyard Friends" indeed, Bainn - in your childhood maybe...!

Seriously, I love all animals but some can be seriously daunting eg. angry cows and annoyed geese!

Geese were kept as guard dogs at the Johnny Walker Distillery in Kilmarnock (beat Sark to a Kilmarnock fact Grin) - not because they were particularly dangerous, but because they're damn noisy when disturbed. They also were a nice Xmas bonus for the staff (see Taximan's pic above).

I hate geese too and find them really creepy. I was ambushed when I was a young nipper and one of the gits attacked me. From then on, I've always been scared of them and, on one occassion, had to make a 10 minute detour around a whole pond because they were blocking the path and I didn't fancy risking it.

They're still not as scary as somehting like a bull or an ostrich, mainly because of the rape factor.
