I could desperately do with some more optical zoom.

These are at full zoom (12X) and about a 50% crop.

Thanks for the - exposure tip.

I have - /  + exposure settings, but would increasing shutter speed so that the shot is slightly under exposed do the same job and decrease the chance of camera-shake at the same time?

Possibly, but wouldn't that increase the risk of grain in the images?

I've never really got to grips with exposure settings, shutter speed and 90% of the other settings on my camera.  I'm more of an experiment until it works type.

On a digital camera, only increasing the ISO will increase the grain. If you decrease the exposure with the +- settings, the camera will either speed up the shutter, close the aperture, or decrease the ISO. Or all 3. Depends on the camera I suspect. None of which will increase grain.

So if I manually increase the shutter speed, it will have the effect of under exposing the photograph?

If I do it that way, I get two benefits.

I pushed the shutter speed up to 1/640.

The result is definitely under exposed but it did go some way towards capturing an 'action' shot.

Assuming I had enough light, what sort of speed would I need to freeze the movement of the wings?

Nice, I like them, especially the second one. Answer to your question is hard to say - best thing is try it at the fastest it can go (1/2000th? 4000th?) and see what they look like. Depends on the bird, whether the wings happen to be at top/bottom of travel at that instant, etc. Of course for this you may need to push up the ISO, but this is the balance you strike - it's why sports photographers tend to have gigantic zoom lenses with apertures of f2.8 or better, and still shoot at ISO3200.

Great pics red, can't wait to learn about shutter speeds, ratios and ISOs.

Saw a green woodpecker earlier. Was unable to get a pic though.

I feel like I have earned some posting credits for your diary today Mr Dog!

I have spent all morning in my garden. When I say garden its about 8x3m, but still, its unbelievable how long it takes to do anything.

I do have a purpose to for mentioning the above on this diary, in that I'm sure if you cant help, one of your well read, educated readers probably can (unlike some other diaries on here)!

I have spent a good while clearing ivy, some of which was from brickwork. I have removed the foliage, but some of the "folks/grips" have really stained my wall. I have tried brushing with  a stiff brush but it literally had no effect. Any ideas on how I can remove this unsightly staining?

I cant believe I spent (lost?) a whole morning removing ivy and pruning a tree! That said, I do feel remarkably relaxed - almost Zen like!

Wiiiiiiii!!

Guy posting here again.

I've spent many a sweaty hour wrestling with ivy, (No making your own jokes up) and I finally learned that the best way to remove it is to just wut the tap roots and wait until it dies.

Just let time take care of the stain, it will fade eventually. Otherwise you will have a big bright patch on the wall where you've cleaned it.

Pics of wall please.

Clarification of what 'wut the tap roots' means please. I also have a problem with ivy.
