Yep. Won a seat to an EPT there once. Got bust early by some luck box called Barney Boatman so had plenty of time to explore the city with Mrs Red.

I loved the history and the people. The open top bus tour was really great value because the talks were really interesting and if you saw something you wanted explore a little more closely you could hop off and then get back on the next one about 20 minutes later.

Played at the Fitz a few times. Very friendly.

Excellent Tom. I have a story from the Fitz that would not be repeated over here. We went to play their €100 comp and found it clashed with their monthly league game. This resulted in 80 regular players registered in the league game and only 16 in the €100er. I asked Denise the cardroom manager if she knew what comp was on at their competitors, The Sporting Emporium. "Hang on, I'll find out for you " she says, and duly picks up the phone and rang to find out.
As it happens the comp was small with few runners expected so we decided to play the Fitz. As a thank you Denise put our name in a book giving us both free entry into a comp next time we were over.

I've done pretty much all of the tours and probably my fave is the 1917 Revolution tour. Done it twice, once with the Irish guide "Lorcan" and again with his English compadre. If you ever get chance "Lorcan" is your man. I have a great pic of us and the boys from 2009, I'll post it if that's ok.

Quite significant to us as it's 6pm on 25th May 2009 exactly 2 years to the date and time that we lost my Mum, their Nan. So we are toasting her life in her home Country. We had a great time. Pity Callum has his eyes closed.

When I heat my soup in the microwave, why does the dish get hotter than the food?

One for the 'don't get it' thread I think Tom. The funny thing is the microwaves don't significantly heat the dish, it's the heat from the food transferring to the dish. Which raises the question, how can the dish be hotter than the food when the dish gets its heat from the food?

Ty Ty.

That's a great film. I've always loved animated films. Aristocats, "Thomas O'malley, O'Malley the alley cat. Brilliant. Don't get me started on Ice Age.

Speaking of fighting, I heard a sound like angry hornets coming from behind a hedge the other day. I went to investigate and found myself in a sort of twilight zone where grown men treat toy car racing as a matter of life and death.

There was a proper track, with a race stewards building, traffic lights, slomo cameras, the works. In the 'pit' area, each race team had their own test / repair bench, complete with spare tyres, parts & tools etc.

At one point, after a particularly nasty crash, two of the drivers threw down their remote control boxes and got stuck into each other. There was blood and snot flying for yards. The stewards had to split them up, and then everyone had to have a good talking to before the race could be re started.

One bloke told me that he had raced almost every weekend for over 30 years, and spent the time in between races working on his little car.

There's no accounting for taste eh? Still, each to his own.

As my Uncle Charlie used to say in defence of his almost fanatical love of country music, "If ladies can love outlaws, I'm sure that I can love Waylon and Willie".

Your post has got me thinking Andrew.

If the soup conducts heat better than the bowl, does that mean the soup will pass it's heat on quickly, while the bowl will retain it, thereby becoming hotter?

Not sure but it sounds plausible. Are you stirring the soup before you test the heat?
Maybe the depth/amount of soup in the dish means that whilst in the microwave the outer edges of the soup is hot inline with the dish but as you stir mixing the centre, deeper and therefore cooler soup all together bringing the overall temperature of the soup down.

Your post has got me thinking Andrew.

If the soup conducts heat better than the bowl, does that mean the soup will pass it's heat on quickly, while the bowl will retain it, thereby becoming hotter?

It's not impossible that the microwaves are heating the bowl. Microwave ovens work because water is a dipolar molecule - each molecule effectively has an electrical imbalance, which the microwaves vibrate, which causes heat. It's not impossible that the material in the bowl has some dipolar bits trapped in the crystal lattice structure, which could also cause it to heat up. Given that water has a very large heat capacity compared to most solids, even a small amount of energy absorbed by the bowl could cause it's temperature to rise higher than the soup.

The second question doesn't make much sense if there is no microwave heating of the bowl. The bowl could be hotter than the soup now due to differential heat loss, but it could never be hotter than the maximum temperature the soup reached. That would break the second law of thermodynamics.

Your final point is sort of correct, except it's more likely to be the other way round - the bowl will lose energy at a similar rate to the soup, but because of specific heat capacity difference (soup > bowl), the soup is likely to lose temperature slower than the bowl. And neither of them will become hotter, unless there is another external source of heat.
