I'm just watching How The Universe Works on TV.
This is the umpteenth time I've had the big bang theory explained to me and I'm still struggling with it.
Essentially, it seems you have to accept that, at the moment of creation, everything in the universe was formed from nothing at all.
At first it was nothing, and then it was something that was infinitely small, infinitely dense and infinitely hot.
Then it exploded and everything that has ever been or will ever be burst out.
Simples.
This theory could have been expostulated by a religious fanatic or a scientist. Either would sound equally ridiculous.

400
billion
galaxies, each one containing anything up to a trillion stars squeezed into a speck smaller than a single atom.

The universe expanded faster than the speed of light.
In the beginning, things happened so fast that they needed a new unit of time to describe it. It's called 'Plank Time'
There are more units of plank time in one second than there have been seconds since the big bang.
31 million seconds in a year x 14 billion years since the big bang.

On the small side then.

Granny used to tell me I shouldn't think about things like this, it would addle my brains.
Found myself saying the same thing to Alisha after she asked me a gazillion questions the other day

At first there was only energy, which eventually transformed into matter.
An atom bomb reverses this process, creating a tremendous amount if energy from a tiny amount of matter.
This stuff always smacks my gob.

Not sure about this one.
I think...the expansion of space after the big bang meant that, because the space itself was moving, things that seemed to have travelled faster than the speed of light didn't actually; the point is that we measure speed by reference to distance and if the points are moving away from each other, a measure of distance is meaningless.
So...that means things that seem to be moving faster than the spread of light actually aren't.
I think.

Also, it is Planck Time, after Max Planck. Planck Time is a tiny portion of time based on a number called Planck's Constant.

Ah! Thanks.
I didn't see it written, I only heard it, but I shouldn't have assumed.

I'm an interested idiot, so don't confuse me for someone who understands all this stuff.
You'd definitely enjoy a 2 part programme called Everything and Nothing. It was on BBC FOUR and presented by Jim Al-Khalili. Explained some of the stuff about how something can come from nothing.
Obviously makes you feel very smart until you try to explain it. Then it ends up like my post two above. Sigh...

That's my problem with the big bang theory. I only understand it while someone is explaining it.

The problem with physics at really large and really small scales is that the human brain struggles to comprehend it.
