Are you being nagged by SWMBO to join Facebook?
No, not SWMBO, it's someone who I talk to regularly. (That didn't come out right)
Anyway. The person in question reads this diary, so these replies are just what I need.
Excellent.
I was never really considering signing up
, but I felt obliged to explain why.
Such a shame. You could have asked to be my friend, or
vice-versa
.
You've almost set me off on a "Devaluation of concepts" rant.
I've been simmering it for a while now, but today is not the day to take the lid off.
Well start on the devaluation of the concept of "friend".
These days, peeps seem to think if they have met you, then you are a friend. They don't consider that the real definition is acquaintance, adversary, colleague, someone they met. It's "friend" now. Anyone you have met anywhere is a "friend".

Just in, via e-Mail, more Facebok splurge.
"...XXXX invited you to join the Facebook group "REGENCY 'POKER CLUB'".

It's like a ringing telephone though. Don't wanna answer it, probably a timewaster. But it
might
be important......so you answer it.

Really? You don't screen your phone calls before answering? Even if it's Ironside?
I don't know which email client you use (Outlook I guess?), but create a folder in there called 'Facebook', and then set up a rule that filters any emails you receive from facebook into there. If you want to can immediately mark them as read as well. If you wanted to, you could automatically delete these emails so you'd never have to see them at all.
Take control. The technology is there to serve you, not the other way round.

I don't always know who they are from, sometimes it just comes up as a number. Texts, ditto. I had one this morning that said "thank you for last night, you were awesome". I kid you not. But it was just a "number". Could have been anyone.....

Here's a question that's related to feeling compelled to answering calls.
If you are talking to a 'friend', say at DTD, and your phone rings - do you check to see who's calling and then take the call if you deem it important? What about if it's a number you don't recognise?

That would depend. It's incredibly rude to take 'phone calls when you are in convo with someone. The social etiquette as to when you should or should not take a 'phone call is quite dreadful these days.

I think it's simple. Unless you're waiting for a specific call that's of great importance to you, and you're in a conversation with someone you want to be in a conversation with, you simply do not answer your phone. Just silence it. If it's important, they'll leave a message. If it's not, they won't.
If you were in a meeting, and someone opened the door and barged in demanding that you talk to them immediately it would be considered rude and unnecessary (unless there was some emergency that demanded your immediate attention). It's the same when you're talking to someone and your phone 'interrupts'. If you were on your phone, and another call comes through, you don't often take the other call unless it's very important. You just get back to the caller later. Why should it be different if you're talking to someone face-to-face? In fact, that makes it more impolite imo.
I don't see any particularly grey area here - seems quite simple to me.

I'll tell you what pisses me right off. You're standing a queue waiting to speak to someone at a counter, and the telephone rings. (I'm not talking personal phones here, I mean the business phone)
The caller gets immediate attention, while we poor schmucks, who have taken the time to turn up in person, shuffle our feet and wait even longer.

Standing outside DTD, talking to someone i didn't really want to talk to I got a text from a nearby Tikay which said "Do you want rescuing?"
I texted back "Yes please, ring me" and I waited for the call. I continued waiting, and waiting and waiting as my undesirable 'friend' continued warbling on about bad beats etc etc.
Eventually I made a very bad excuse and got away. I challenged Mr Kendall "Why didn't you ring me?" I asked. "Sorry" he said with a broad grin "I thought it would be rude to interrupt".
Who needs friends.......
