Oh I didn't intend to sound flippant. I hope no one took it that way.

That's the easiest way - the more precise ways involve things like

which are a little harder to explain

Way out of my depth with those equations!  I don't buy your previous example though.

Say x = 0.9999

10x = 9.999

9x = 8.9991 so x =0.9999 (i.e. no change)

Your "proof" works because you're effectively adding one extra 9 to the answer you get for 10x

Keeping the numbers small and manageable you're effectively saying

Say x = 0.9999

10x = 9.9999

Then 9x = 9, so x =1 (but to achieve this you've had to add an extra 9 to the 10x answer. If 0.999 was truly recurring you could never actually add an extra 9 as both numbers would go on infinitely).

Nope, just my  (bad) attempt at humour!

infinity  gets quite tricky - but basically it's because it goes on infinitely is the reason why you can 'add' the extra 9 on the end

infinity = infinity*10, you're not really adding the 'extra' 9 - it was there all along - because it's infinity

ummmmmmmmmm like I said, infinity gets quite tricky

I like this simple proof:

1/9 = 0.111...

Multiply both sides by 9:

9 x 1 / 9 = 0.111... x 9

Therefore

1 = 0.999...

It's a wonderfully cold winter morning here at chez Red. There is the slightest suspicion of a frost on the ground and the air is uncannily still.

The sky, lit by an unseen sun changes slowly from ash grey to the palest of blues. Then, for some reason, it goes back to the grey, and then back to the blue again. It does this twice in the space of a few minutes.

I move closer to the window and rub my eyes, even the birds, who are busy tugging early worms from the crispy lawn seem to pause and look around.

It's a strange sensation, watching as the mood lighting of the morning is adjusted. It's as though God is playing with his dimmer switch.

He finally decided on the setting marked 'Beautiful'.

There's a bit more news on the Red Arrows accident here.

It seems it happened as he handed after a display.

Mrs Red, (who was treating herself to a lie-in) has just surfaced, if surfaced is the right word.

So far, I can see one finger and one eye and I can hear a croaky voice saying "mek me some tea...."

Made a shock discovery today.

A slice of smoked ham has 25% more calories than a slice of unsmoked ham.

Why is that?

Another amazing discovery.

If a statue of a person on a horse has both front legs in the air, the person died in battle.

If the horse has one front leg in the air, the person died as a result of wounds received in battle.

If the horse has all four legs on the ground, the person died of natural causes.

Tobacco is high in calories.

I know that if all four of the horse's legs are off the ground, it means someone is pinching the statue.
