Sounds like it would be a better game if they amalgamated both forms.

They could call it 'Rugby Urgh' or 'Rugby Lunion'

Union is the original, League stemmed from a breakaway around the turn of the last century. When Union was amateur and League was pro, League was the tougher game played by fitter (& probably harder) individuals. Since the advent of the professional era, Union and the people that play it, has come on in leaps and bounds, at least in terms of fitness.

I've been brought up on Union and will always think it's the better, more elegant sport. But I'm 47 now so each to their own.

I seem to remember that union/league was very contentious in Wales.  A Union player switching to league being disowned by family etc.

As I understand it.  Union is the more softer game of the two. League is where the real boys play.

Right. Do both forms have scrums?

What are they for?

How do they work?

Union has an 8 man scrum. It is a means of restarting a game after a minor infringement (the side with the advantage has the put in). It is competitive, and advantage is sought via technique, strength and teamwork

The scrum though is blighted by bad rulemaking by the authorities. Back in the old days it was the scene of epic battles. these days less so

League has a 6 man scrum. It is solely a means of restarting the game

the 13 a side code lacks two forwards (flankers) that makes Union a 15 man game

How do you know who won the scrum? I can never work out what they're trying to do with the ball, no one seems to want to touch it.

the scrum half feeds the ball in

the hooker, middle of the front row, uses his foot to hook the ball backwards

it reaches the feet of the player at the base of the scrum

he picks it up, or the scrum half picks it up

and on goes play via run, pass, kick....

But how is where the ball is put in, or indeed thrown in governed?

The throws seem to be designed to be too high to reach.

that would be a line out? scrum feeds are along the floor

But how is where the ball is put in, or indeed thrown in governed?

scrum put in is at the point where the infringement took place (leave the 10 yards in for now)

line out where the ball goes out of play

Yes yes, but I mean why wouldn't you put it in in such a way as to make it easier for your team mate to get it first?

Union

the throw in at scrum and line out has to be straight to give both teams opportunity to win the contest. If not, the team throwing in or putting is is penalised

League

No line outs...the scrum feed is not straight, ever, so that advantage you refer to is basically granted

Not sure this thread should be a platform for such matters.
