So while we're talking about photographs....
I have literally fazands of photographs scattered all over my hard-drive. They are in folders because every now and then when they start to clutter up the place, I gather up all the loose ones and put them in a folder, but there is no sort of order at all. Family snaps, occasions, holidays, landscapes, architecture, cultural stuff, arty farty stuff, all mixed together.
How do I begin to sort them out, and how do I categorise them, and how do I store them?
TIA.
Why clutter up your hard drive. There are a few free photy album hosting sites. I use
http://photobucket.com/
to store them all there. And it makes for easier attaching to posts on forums.
Am sure Rod will be along shortly to guide you best on how to sort.
Geo
Aren't you afraid that photobucked will go tits up one day and you will lose the lot?
I also write them to disc, should have said
Geo
When you say disc, you mean CD/DVD?
You should deffo have an external hard drive to back up and keep a copy of everything important to you.
Maybe, however probably easier to break an external drive than all my cd's

If you get an external hard drive Tom make sure you get on that's USB3 compatible.
You might not have USB3 on your pc at the moment but if you upgrade it's best to have it available on your existing hard drive.

Yep,
got a couple of buckets of these from a friend
Geo
Pffft, external hard drives are the way forward now fella.
Am sure I'm capable of making that choice, just that I tend to run bad when it comes to breaking things like that so am happy with the cd's

Chances of your external hard drive and comp going done at the same time are virtually zilch though mate.

It doesn't matter if you break it though. It's only if you break your master and back up at the same time that you have problems.

I read a lot of stuff about jpg's being lossy and picture quality degrading after several editing / copying processes, although I have to admit I've never noticed anything.
Is it bollocks?

Apparently not although I have no experience myself.
Do you save your images as jpg's then Tom?
I would've thought that someone who take proper pictures should save them in the largest file possible.
If the original picture is 5MB in size surely you want to save the whole thing?

Apparenty true and RAw format is the wtg.
I have no idea about such matters but a mate of mine who was in the printing industry always used to harp on about it.

Never noticed tbh. If its a pro discussing it they always use and recommend shooting in and using RAW files as they contain a lot for info than jpegs and more stuff can be altered afterwards. Chances are the software you have won't open RAW files though.

Well for a start I didn't know I was someone who takes proper pictures, and secondly, I can use jpg's which are like 500kb, or TIFF files, with are like 17mb per pic and really slow my camera down.
