Ralph thinks it's perfectly natural to carry a supply of emergency cheese. The last time I traveled with him he had emergency dates and emergency Turkish Delight. Halfway to our destination, he pulled over and ate a portion of each

I forgot to tell you. Prior to our brush with airport securty we were not exactly running late, but we were conscious of the time. Still we had about 40 mins to spare before they closed the boarding gate, so Ralph insisted that we should have some breakfast at Garfunkel's restaurant.
We seated ourselves at a table in Garfunkel's. 15 minutes later, we asked the waitress why she was avoiding us. "This table is closed" She informed us, we moved one table to the left and she took our order.
By the time the meal came we didn't have time to eat it, which was HST as well because it was horrible. Ralph paid for the uneaten food while I watched two of the waitresses having a fight, then we hurried off in search of departure gate 32.
We had 6 minutes left when we saw a sign that said "Departure gates 29 to 36, please allow 20 minutes walking time from this point" Somehow, we managed to cover 20 minutes distace in 5 minutes 40 seconds. We arrived, breath rasping, legs like rubber, to find
Simon
Galloway
waiting to greet us from the back of a very long queue
A mere hour or two later, we were on the plane.

A rookie mistake - you'll learn to avoid such places.

The flight seemed to take forever. I was tired and grumpy and beginning to feel just a little under the weather, headache, sore throat, aching joints, and a pain in my cheek just where the upper and lower mandible meet. I self diagnosed it as lockjaw.
I had an aisle seat and made a point of getting up and walking about every hour or so, eventually getting brave enough to help myself to drinks from the galley. Ralph followed suit.
On one of these trips, Ralph helped himself to a large glass of white wine, then, probably a bit guilty, he returned to his seat and sat down a little too quickly, shearing off the plug end of his headphone jack and tearing a hole in his £80 trousers in the process.
Ralph tried to show me the hole in the arse of his pants but I couldn't see properly so I lifted up his dinner tray, spilling the wine all over Ralph and some horse racing journalist bloke who knows Compo. A little later, there was a nasty incident with a cheese and spinach wrap. (Yes, Ralph was involved again).
The pain in my jaw got worse. I was just wondering what would happen if I pulled the big handle on the exit door when, with the slightest of bumps, we touched down in Vegas.
It gets worse...

If Dave picked you up afternoon time it sounds like you flew direct, best way IMHO up down and over with plus less time wasted at connecting airports and ques.
i have heard people say that, but in all honesty any time I have connected in the US I always feel more adjusted when I reach my destination. basically I will arrive somewhere like chicago/dallas/atlanta and have a couple of hours to kill, get some food, go and relax in the business lounge, then get on my connection, have a kip then feel pretty good when I get there.
i hate connecting coming back the way though - especially via amsterdam.

I guess we all differ.
The first few times we flew via chicago, then slipped a Direct in between, didn't like it at first, but then after going a few times direct would hate to return to via. I agree with the Amsterdam thing totaly.

Before it got worse, it got better. Jim and Nancy met us a the airport in a car that was probably only slightly less sophisticated than the star ship Enterprise. When we were still 150 yerds away from it, it unlocked it's doors and raised it's tailgate in anticipation of out luggage, then, it started it's engine and switched on it's air conditioning all before we got anywhere near it.
Within no time at all, We were wafted down the strip ans deposited on Ballies doorstep.
Thanks guys.

STOP Posting Tom, now, I'm getting all envious here.
Emergency Cheese? What? Is this the phobia old folks have about always stockpiling food "In case" of shortages, or delays? You'll be teling me next that Raif has taken his own kettle & Tea-Bags.
Jim's car - how smart & clever is that? He took us from The Venetian to Red-Rock in it, & I was staggered by it's bells & whistles - engine turns on, Air-Con too, boot opens - & we were nowhere near the thing. Awesome.
