AN American man in Melbourne for the Aussie Millions poker tournament has lost $30,000 in winnings in a knifepoint robbery.

Jason Potter from Oklahoma was attacked about 4.30am as he was returning to the Crown Plaza Hotel, where he was staying after a big win at the Crown Casino tournament.

Mr Potter said he was walking across Spencer Street bridge, just about 50m from his hotel, when a man hit him over the head and pulled out a knife before demanding he hand over all his cash.

Mr Potter said he had earlier in the evening cashed in a large quantity of poker chips for US $100 bills and Australian notes.

Police appealed to banks and financial institutions to be alert for anyone trying to exchange large sums of US currency.

Bit harsh imo. Guy posts on 2+2 theres a few threads over there with a mixture of sympathies and mick taking..

What you guys think should he have been more careful with $30k on his person?? Never having been to the area I dunno what safety is like I just know personally that if ive ever won a sum of cash live that I think is alot I taxi front door to front door and make sure that I am safe..

I certainly wouldn't walk around Barcelona with anything about a ten bob note on me. That place has more muggers than players.

With $30k on me I would of found two of the biggest guys in the Casino to "escort" me to the hotel.

NOW WAY would I walk with that amount of cash alone.

When I left Luton with £26k to walk to the carpark (approx 30 yards) I made damn sure I was walking VERY close to Barry Neville & Co.

Gotta feel for the lad though
