I'm a big fan of the Swedish films and the books and went into the new version with low expectations.  Was extremely impressed with it though - much, much better than I could have hoped for.  Right from the kick off, with it's Bond-style opening credits, it reassured me that it wasn't going to be the disaster I had foreseen.

To someone who hasn't read the books the remake is easier to follow, partly due to the lack of subtitles but also with the explanation of the guardianship issues and the Wennerstrom libel case where the story begins.

It's worth seeing both as each film focuses a little differently on some of the side plots from the book (e.g. the relationship with Berger is in this film, but largely ignored in the Swedish one).

After several replys on twitter after I'd asked about Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, went last night and was truly awesome I thought.

Rooney Mara who plays Lisbeth Salander was superb.

Have you seen the original Swedish trilogy? How does it compare? I thought the Swedish films were at least as good as the books, tbh, but I've heard good things about the new one, so I'd be interested to see how it compares.

Thought these were brilliant.. the first exceptional..they detracted a little as they went on

Agreed, but then so did the books, IMNSHO. Lots of padding, especially in #2. The first 100 pages are entirely superfluous, and the film-makers apparently agreed.

Looking forward to this then. Whether I'll actually get to the cinema to see it is another question. Can't imagine the wife being particularly fussed by this. Might have to wait for the BR.

only just got round to watching the warrior, which is good but predictable 7/10

I watched Warrior the other day and thought it was brilliant.

Not a big ufc fan but enjoyed that part of it, and although the story was v predictable it was still a very emotional ending and just really really good.

My sister was in tears at the end (in before your sister would be in tears if I got my hands on her end).

9/10

Tarantino revived Travoltas career  by casting him in pulp fiction. Despite earlier huge success he had become persona non grata in  Holywood and it would be very interesting to find out what his net worth was down to just prior to Pulp.

das boot needs to be on any list of german movies, the only foreign language film in my top 10

if so, Der Untergang and Das Leben der Anderen should shortly be making an appearance in that list as well Wink

I think they are both markedly better films.

Das Boot >>> Der Untergang for me. Downfall was a good film, but the ending of Das Boot is seared into my memory. Incredibly moving. And of course the problem with Downfall now is that you can't watch Hitler's blowup without chortling about all the mashups. On a list of good German films I'd put Lola Rennt (Run Lola Run) up there as well. Wasn't sure about it at first, but gets better and better all the way through.

Although that's probably exhausted the list of German films I've actually seen, if you don't count a couple of Fritz Lang films.

figured that a london-edinburgh train would be the perfect opportunity to finally watch downfall. big sigh when I discovered my copy was missing the last 20 minutes. was nowhere near as good as das boot though anyway imo

Watched Warrior yesterday and thought it was pretty decent too, as Brent said predictable but a good film nonetheless.
