https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stalingrad_(2013_film) makes saving private ryan seem like a kindergarten outing

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_for_Sevastopol

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enemy_at_the_Gates (probably seen that, jude law is a sniper...)

the older stalingrad film is interesting too https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stalingrad_(1993_film)

Ah yes, read several books on Stalingrad, that and the Battle of Britain are the two most interesting/jaw dropping WW2 things I have read about, cheers Rich.

Can we include Schindler's List and The Pianist as war films?

I thought The Hurt Locker was a very good, recent war film.

Further back in film history, there were some outstanding films from the 1950s & 1960s (in addition to Kwai) like Paths of Glory, The Hill, Ice Cold in Alex, and of course one of the very first blockbusters, The Longest Day. The first two are perhaps more accurately described as human dramas in war settings. The Dirty Dozen's another classic, albeit wartime fantasy film.

My personal alltime fav is Saving Private Ryan. First time watching a film that I felt I was there in the middle of the visceral action. I still tear up watching the closing sequences. Spielberg really is a genius film-maker imo.

PS Saw Dunkirk this afternoon: seemed like half the audience had been alive during actual events. Hope they all enjoyed it. I caught a fair bit of the hype, so found myself slightly underwhelmed. Liked the minimalist approach, though.

PPS Try Cross of Iron for an alternative take on the war on the Russian Front
