Free Solo

Won best documentary at this years Oscars. Caught it on Sky tonight.

The story of a man who climbs without ropes facing his biggest challenge. It builds slowly, an interesting character study that culminates in a final 20mins that actually made my heart race and hands sweat. Beautifully shot and paced - weaving in lots of back story that makes the final section mean so much.

It's just a 10/10 all day long.

Incredible piece of film making and story telling

The latest twenty minutes where as tense as anything I've seen

Captain Marvel.

Fine if you want to see a flat performance from an Oscar winner, Samuel L going through the motions and CGI from about ten years ago.

Peterloo -  An epic portrayal of true events surrounding the infamous 1819 Peterloo Massacre, where a peaceful pro-democracy rally at St Peter's Field in Manchester turned into one of the bloodiest and most notorious episodes in British history. Can be a bit of a plod in parts but it's superbly directed by Mike Leigh, some of the characters and the rhetoric they spout are both truly memorable. Never watched one of his films before but impressed with his style, and the final scenes are pretty epic. History buffs and political wizards should lap this up.

Will do, many thanks.

Amazing that the massacre occurred simply because regular folk wanted a vote but the political class thought they were too stupid to understand issues.

Now where have I heard that before?

Greta

Low budget psychological thriller from Irishman, Neil Jordan (Mona Lisa, The Crying Game, Interview with the Vampire).

A predictable plot, but there's an unusual authenticity about the detail within it for a film of this genre. None of the dead come back to life for cheap shocks.

It really is an unsettling film and well worth seeing.

Avengers Endgame ( No Spoilers )

Ultimate Fajita Friday time despite the better half insisting on a Frankie & Benny’s pre show.. I spoil her.. I really do.. Del Boy had Steak and all the trimmings.. I have a meat filled Calzone and sweet potato fries. You boys want any tips on how to treat the ladies you only have to ask ..
So we arrive at the final film in this current phase of the MCU universe... if this means something to you then I have only one thing to say ..

NERRRRRRRRRRRRRRDDDDDDDDDDDD!

Ok so with that out of the way we rejoin our heroes ( well some of them as a ton of them got wiped out at the end of the last film and after several thousand of us received professional counselling to deal with the loss, we are now ready to continue the journey ) as they come to terms with the reality that Thanos achieved his goal and wiped out half of all living creatures in the universe, a sort of Nazi wet dream combined with the greatest census achievement known to man.

Simply described the film is a sentimental sandwich.. We get a huge slice at the beginning and another doorsteps worth at the end and in the middle a great wodge of Avenger action. Perhaps this is why it runs at a bum numbing 3 hours. In fairness this marathon did seem to skip by which does indicate the makers got a lot right.

To Avenger fans ( there are a lot and yes I am one of the 8 year old adults of this world..You are too ..Come on admit it ) it’s just utter porn. It was hard to see how the makers could follow the success and wonder hit that was Infinity War. I mean how do you follow that heart stopper? But by and large they seemed to have pulled off a great job.

It does meander for a while.. I suppose that’s fine to a degree but as alluded to before they lay the old sentimentality on a bit thick and at points in the first act you find yourself quietly wanting them to get on with it.. Yes we get it..Great loss.. boo hoo.. We’ve had professional help now let’s roll,
and roll we do. We have some nice human character qualities bestowed upon some of our favourite heroes, giving head to the usual Avenger humour and for the most part they do raise a nice warm chuckle. We build to a complex climax with as much Avengering as you can handle before slowly bringing you back into the final lump in the throat act.

Overall ?.. They did a good job.. Considering they could have missed very wide after infinity war.. I daresay it will have detractors, some genius trying to be clever and different but for the majority of us simple minded folk it was pretty much what we wanted.

I have spent many years going to the cinema and I don’t think I have ever seen it so busy.. I have no doubt this will be the highest grossing film ever..

Oh and I hope you don’t see this as a spoiler rather saving 10 minutes of your life.. There is no usual Marvel end of credits scene.. We waited patiently for the appetite whetter along with the rest of the saddo’s only for the screen to go blank and the lights go up... Looooool Fuck you Marvel and all your insidious children.

A very solid 8 wise Guys out of 10

Ok end of review thought... I have noticed on the last couple of trips to the cinema a worrying trend. The amount of people constantly on their phone.. Seriously guys just WTF..Why have you come to the cinema and then spend every five minutes with your head in your phone.. Here are some pointers.

1.   I guarantee you are not important enough in this world that you cannot be contactable for a couple of hours.
2.   If you are important enough that you cannot be contactable for a couple of hours then don’t go to the fucking cinema!
3.   You are a Dick.. you do realise that every time you look at your phone it lights up like a beacon from Heaven
4.   You are one sad fuck.. Believe me that funny video of someone tripping over.. You know the one similar to the other 14000 videos of someone falling over you have watched giggling at like a moron.. it’s still going to be there in two hours time

If you are one of these people.. Please Stop

Good rec 4k, wasn't going to watch Greta after reading a couple of reviews in the paper, but Brooklyn's ex was fine and it's better than average.

Eighth Grade also pleasing - the lead's outstanding - for those who can manage something more challenging than Avengers: Moreofthesame.

Had to drive 30 odd miles to find a cinema not clogged up with that bullshit. £1b worldwide in one weekend! Incred.

What Men Want

A flip version of ‘what women want’, so basically a rom com. Thought it was Ok actually and reasonably entertaining if you are stuck for something to watch. 6/10

Rocketman

Seems they couldn’t decide what kind of film to make, nor what focus to give the film... so it all ends up as a very large Elton mess. I think the chronology was all over the place, too... but I could be wrong as I’ve not researched it. IMO I think they’d have made a better film by concentrating on his relationship with Bernie Taupin, and have the rest of it revolve around them. I suspect that we won’t get a really good treatment of Elton’s life until after he’s left us.

However I thought the lead did a good job of portraying EJ and the singing was pretty decent too. Hard to think of any major highlights, so my advice would be wait till it’s on the telly.
