Absolutely fascinated by the variety of race types and event structures.

Our team is just awe inspiring - really great to watch something we dominate at.

That is all

Yep, I am truly proud to be British for this olympic games.  Loving the cat and mouse games, and the points races.  I've never understood how they work until this Olympic Games.  It's great to be able to watch the cycling, rowing, and swimming and know that we are practically guaranteed medals!  When you think of the size of the USA and China compared to the size of Britain we are doing so well to be 3rd in the medals.  Apparently USA and China have over 600 people entered into the games, and we have half that amount.  It's definitely an achievement.

I LOLed.

Teams USA and China have more people than us and we still manage to come 3rd behind them. not quite sure how that's an achievement, it would be an achievement to come above a bigger team, not below.

olympics thread over here btw if you missed it http://blondepoker.com/forum/index.php?topic=35565.0, we're all being proud except kev who hates everyone

How can it not be an achievement just to be in a situation to compete with these big countries.  IMHO it's an achievement to be anywhere near them with half the number of competitiors, and a far smaller population to select athletes from.  Ok then, we are above Australia, who are a huge country, there's our achievement Wink

Being above Germany and France would probably be a better comparison

Which we are Grin.

If you haven't read it (not you Jon, obviously), read the article Jon pointed out about why our cycling team is so good:

Kev doesn't hate all the GB team, but I get the feeling he thinks most of them are a bunch of slackers...

To be honest though, some of the comments that are made make me want to pull my hair out and ask for a refund.

we're not anywhere near the chinese and won't be near the americans by the end.

the achievement is being above so many countries with similar or far bigger populations and good sporting infrastructure. france, germany and russia most notably.

you're right about the aussies though, we pwn them on medals/square mile. and the yanks, and the chinese

People do need to remember that these are sportsmen and women, many still very young, and they haven't had media training and are often interviewed straight after finishing - and so aren't always going to give the most incisive and well thought-out responses to some of the inane questions they are asked.

But yes, some do say stupid things!

Yep there is that too, although our population isn't that much different to that of France and Germany.  We would all love to beat the Americans and the Chinese but let's face it, we are talking about the most heavily populated country in the world (who also happen to be the home nation) and America, home to over 300 million people and possibly (although we hate it and won't admit it) the most powerful country in the world.  Can't see how being able to compete with them isn't an achievement.  What I mean is that it is an achievement to be 3rd in the table, and only be behind to these two countries, rather than listing all the countries we are ahead of..that would take ages.

I would be more impressed if we excelled at stuff that wasn't minority.

If we start shipping Athletics medals i will be happy!!

Swimming was obv a great start in this respect.

Surely cycling is as much a minority sport as swimming is?
