I recently joined the 21st century and bought an ipod and after a massive struggle i now have some music on it.My bmw has a superb in built stereo system in it but unfortunately has no point to plug the ipod into it(it's getting on).Has anyone ever used one of those FM transmitter gadgets that you can get on ebay?I had a look on the AVforum site, which is great by btw,but there really geeky and pretty much dismiss them.
Has anyone in the real world used one, tell me all knowing forum.
     cheers col.

There's a handy gadget which looks just like a cassette which costs about £15 and it plugs into your ipod-bingo.

It's this one from halfords, just set the frequency on the device, tune your radio to the same, plug the iPod into the transmitter and away you go.

they are the nuts and couldn't be much simpler to use. virtually no loss of sound quality in the transmission

they are not perfect to be honest, you have to avoid conflict with local stations if on a drive. plug in tape or mp3 direct input much better but for £7/10 they are alright for a temp fix. don't buy massively overpriced belkin type stuff, just the same as chinese unbranded kit.

The ipod transmitter things aren't very good in my experience. You have to keep fiddling with them on a long drive if a radio station interferes and such.

You can get a car stereo with ipod input for like £60-70 these days. Much better option. Although sadly I just bought an ipod touch and it's not compatible with my ipod stereo Sad

they are fine, set the frequency to one which is not surrounded by lots of others obv.   I have used it going from Portsmouth to Notts several times and Portsmouth to Colchester dozens of times ... never had any interference,

I used to have one of the transmitter ones and never had a problem with it. Once you've found a free wavelength to tune it in to you're away.

If you do any long journeys then make sure you get one that charges your iPod as you go. If you don't they drain your battery faster than normal because obviously they're transmitting which requires power.

A friend of mine had a cassette one and said it was brilliant. My transmitter one was good enough that I didn't swap. Down to personal preference really.
