First hand in the Sunday evening £10 FO at Rileys

[ ] I play all the best tourneys

5,000 chips Bkinds 25/50

UTG raised to 250 - he's one of the supposedly serious poker players - likes to tell us he's played at the Casinos and has all the jabber. Can't see this raise as anything other than a strong hand so his  likely range at this point is 10 10+, AQs+
Folds to SB, me, pocket dueces, and rightly or wrongly I decided to call to setmine. If I hit I can get paid off big, if I miss I still have 95BBs to play with...

Two questions really.

Is it OK for me to call and then fold unless I find a flop of  (edit - I'm struggling to imagine a flop I'd have really liked other than 22x so maybe I know the answer to this)

Does BB need 'a hand' to call with? 200 chips into 550 given the structure?

BB can call with a lot of cards really. 67/89...anything.

yeah your call is fine as well...call to hit a set and then fold if you don't. It's what early stages of tourneys are for.

22 is ideal here.  If you 'know' he has a big hand, it might be one he can't get away from - and if you hit your set, you can get a lot of chips.  If you miss - you get away nice and cheaply.

You want the big starting hands later in the tournament when your stack is smaller in relation to the blinds.  Small pairs and sooooted connectors are the business early doors.

this bit I don't get. are you saying you're going to pass unless you flop quads? this obv is a terrible plan

nothing wrong with setmining here. if your read on the player is correct then risking 5% of your stack to hit a 2 is great as with that range he's likely to pay you off when you hit. even better if the bb comes along too and he should be with quite a large range

I was doubting myself for a moment and also allowing the thought that a flop with a 2 and a card that fell within UTGs raising range could see me facing a bigger set.

TBH I was happy enough with my actions and the flop of Q47 rainbow allowed me to check/fold

I'm more interested in the range of hands that BB can call with 67/89 anything? at this stage is it reasonable to call with ATC? Being last to act and knowing the final price to see the flop.

Dont think you should be worrying about set over set. Its just unlucky.
If it happens its very hard to get away from in a tournament like this.

Dan Harrington tells a story in his book of someone who once laid down a set because he thought the other player had a higher set. He labelled this person an "idiot".

Quoted (correctly - although it won't appear as though I have) for truth
