PFA Awards Nominees
«
on:
April 14, 2009, 02:53:22 PM »
The PFA player of the year nominees have been announced.
Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United)
Steven Gerrard (Liverpool)
Ryan Giggs (Manchester United)
Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United)
Edwin van der Sar (Manchester United)
Nemanja Vidic (Manchester United)
Now, I'm a Man Utd fan, but have to admit, this shortlist seems a little one-sided. No Torres, Fabregas, plus others.
Apparantely the voting took place before United's recent dip in form, but still seems a strange shortlist.
Young Player shortlist is
Gabriel Agbonlahor (Aston Villa)
Rafael Da Silva (Manchester United)
Jonny Evans (Manchester United)
Stephen Ireland (Manchester City)
Aaron Lennon (Tottenham Hotspur)
Ashley Young (Aston Villa)
I'd like to see Ryan Giggs win the main award, but I think he will get beaten by Gerrard for the top honour.

This is voted for by the players themselves - maybe they just inherently view playing again Man Utd as tougher than against other teams.

I think you could be right there. Usually though the players are the ones that see through the media hype and are able to pick a genuine list.
Assuming all 6 make the PFA XI for the season, my XI would be
van der Sar
Essien
Ferdinand
Vidic
Evra
Ronaldo
Gerrard
Fabregas
Giggs
Torres
Rooney
Heavily Man U based, but have to put in the 5 from the shortlist, Evra is best left back by miles and Rooney is having his best season for years with few other strikers in the premiership really shining.

I really don't think Giggs deserves to be in the top six and think his contribution to Man Utd this season has been totally over hyped. He's scored one goal and made more appearences from the bench than he has started games. Now some may argue that this is precisely why Giggs should be included, but i disagree. He isn't even in Utd's first choice 11. IMO someone like Michael Carrick would be much more deserving of a place on the shortlist. There's no bias here - I support Exeter City - but i also think players like Mascherano and Hangelland deserve a spot above Ronaldo, who despite scoring 15 league goals this season, has been distinctly average for the most part.

No Torres and Fabregas isn't a surprise. They've been injured alot and talentwise Torres may be the best striker in the world but he hasn't had an outstanding season. Alot of football opinions seem to sway depending on form (eg Essien in a team of the season when he must have only played a handful of games) but over the season i reckon Vidic and Ireland should win.

Essien, you jest surely?! He's play 5 Prem games!!!!!!!!! Fabregas has barely played since Xmas... Ronaldo has been poor this season by his standards, Rooney?! Wow, I must be in parallel Universe where Jagielka, Alonso, Cahill, Young & Agbonlahor, (for the first 6 months), Hangeland, Rob Green, Michael Turner, Matt Taylor have actually had good seasons!

ridiculous list imo. Essien and Fabregas are excellent players' but they've hardly played this season. Giggs? WTF?

I hear what you are saying, but the PFA shortlist names 6 players, so that leaves 5 more to pick. Two fullbacks, a central midfielder and two strikers.
I wouldn't have Giggs in there. Young has had a much better season.
I also thnk van der Sar isn't the best keeper this season, but it would appear he has been nominated for the clean sheets record.
I don't think that there has been a real stand out player this year (Ronaldo, Henry in previous years).

Fair comment, and I really like his workrate for the team, but would he be in his clubs starting XI with everyone fit ?
He's started half the games this season and scored 3 goals.

I rate Van Der Sar highly, but how much was he the reason ManYoo were keeping clean sheets? I ask you this as you watch their games more than I do, but I think Vidic annd Ferdinand/Evans + Carrick were maybe more of a reason why they kept that many clean sheets.
My team
Schwarzer
Bosingwa
Ferdinand
Vidic
Clichy
Ronaldo
Gerrard
Carrick
Young
Anelka
C Cole
Some unfashionable names, but they have all been outstanding this season. Davies for Bolton has been excellent but I chose Cole because Davies is a donkey. ;-)
