Roy Brindleys commentary

I'm sure he's a decent bloke (though I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt) but for me, he comes across really bad when doing commentary. If anyone on this site knows him personally please ask him to 'reconsider' his style. Commentary is best when it's someone knowledgable and/or funny talking us through the action. NOT someone telling us how wrong everyone's playing. His constant critisism of the players ranges from irritating to infuriating to down right rude. There's no tolerance for players own styles, their reation to the level of pressure at the time, the sub-text of the psychological battle between different players at any given time. It's just "How I'd have done it better"
When I'm watching the football I don't expect to hear Andy Gray tell us in great detail how poor the players on the pitch are and how he'd have struck the ball differently were he on the pitch.
can we please get either Barney back on, or more Padraig (I know opinion is divided but I love his commentary) or best of all, get Tikay up to the plate.

lol which program was he providing commentary on?
He's a nice chap but i've noticed a lot of errors in his commentary aswell
Commentators for me should be Barny, Carlo, Gary Jones or Jesse they are great

I think with Roy it's a "trademark" thing of his to be controversial. He's actually a decent guy to speak to, & share a table with.
But, & I guess this sort of makes Adam's point, I shared a table with Roy in Barcelona last week, & he had the table in stitches. I think he may have been a little tired & distressed, as they say, but there were several Scandies on the table, & he was certainly giving them plenty of grief, & seemed to be targeting them for Re-Raises. Like he targets Scandies as I target the French, but it's not really meant, it's just getting a bit of banter going.
So he gets involved with a young Scandie who had R'd pre-flop, Roy calls the R from late position & gives it the "OK sunshine, lets see you steal this".
Flop comes down KQQ, & Sunshine Scandie bets out.
Roy says "you're having a laugh Mr Linkoping Muppet, what part of that flop have you hit" & promptly calls.
Turn is a blank, Sunshine Scandie bets again, Roy repeats the sermon, "go on Sunshine, keep betting, that hole you are digging is getting deeper", & calls again.
River another blank, Sunshine goes all-in, Roy calls in an instant "go on Muppet, show us what you've been bluffing with". Sunshine Scandie flips over KQ for a fully - which he had flopped, Roy mucks, table collapses with laughter. Sunshine Scandie is one Mikeal Thuritz, who goes on to win the comp.
Rude? Yes. Arrogant? Yes, But he really is NOT rude, NOT arrogant, he's just trying to entertain in his own style. I take your point Adam, but I don't think that's the "real" Roy. Me, I insult the French, but they know I don't really mean it. Or so they think.....

What I'm saying Tikay is his mouth totally ruins the viewing experience for me. The only time I've ever enjoyed him was his face to camera stuff about Devilfish in the BPO. Made all the funnier when he was so obviously out played at the table.
I've said it before and I'll say it again,
"No-one cares about your tri-cast Brindley, sling your hook."
He may well be a decent enough fella but he's got that caustic superior attitude that grates on my nerves.

Point taken Adam, but it takes all sorts. And I do think he does it for effect.

I suspect Brindley would be the first to admit that he is not great at commentating. Being sponsored by Ladbrokes I wonder if he must commentate as part of his contract?
It doesn't irritate me in the slightest though, I rarely pay attention to what the commentators say, unless Jesse comes out with a classic, as the screen gives all the info you need. I'd rather listen to the players bantering if anything.

I agree, more player mics, less coaching from roy 'the oracle' Brindley.
I think you're probably right about the Laddies / Poker million link. means we're probably stuck with him.

Great point you make there Mr Moves.
They wire the players for sound, then talk over what the players are saying. And THAT is what we really wanna hear. How dumb is that??!! What on earth is the point in wiring the players for sound & then not being able to hear what they say?
The greatest commentator I ever heard was Henry Longhurst, who did Golf for many years. He let the pictures do the talking, & did not think it necessary to talk non-stop. He went to America as an old man to commentate on the Masters, & they had never known anyone like him - lots of silence - but the American viewers just loved him. Eventually, he was "given" his "own" hole at the Masters - the 16th I think - & he was the resident commentator on that hole for over 20 years. Great writer too. But I am showing my age now......
Anyway, a plea to TV Producers - please - PLEASE - let us hear the players banter. No commentator in the world - the great Jesse May included - can beat what the actual players are saying.
But, if you'll pardon the pun, I suspect this plea will fall on deaf ears......

John Motson - NOOOOOOOOOOO
Pete Alliss - he'd be perfect!
I hope you get to meet Jesse soon, if we are at a venue together, I will introduce you to him. He is nothing like the TV Jesse - a perfect Gent, quietly spoken, almost normal in fact. And as a writer - well, I got flamed for saying this before, but so what - he's the best Poker Writer by a country mile. Glazer was top rate, and is terribly missed, but Jesse is the man.
