After the WSOP play finishes Ivey goes straight to the Bellagio to play in the huuuuge games which are happening there right now.

either that - or he wants to drink in the atmosphere of being numero uno player at his 2nd home.
Being this famous makes you wonder how you would react if in that situation - James Akenhead could start to get
a mini feel of this. Hope he gets to the final 9 after that horrible beat last year.

please ignore the spammy part of this, but I didn't know Leo Margets was a lady.

888.com employee and semi professional poker player Leo Margets is the last woman standing in this year’s World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas

Leo, who after day seven had moved up to 26th place in the standings with just 27 players left from an original 6,492, was one of the very last few players to enter for this year’s WSOP following a conversation between herself and her employees, as she explains:

“I returned from playing in the WSOP women’s event in Vegas a few weeks ago and just had a feeling that if I could go back for the main event I would do well. It was just a hunch, but it’s proved right! I approached 888.com who had sponsored me in the women’s event, and asked if they would sponsor me through the main WSOP tournament. Very kindly, they agreed and I’m glad I’ve repaid their trust by getting this far!”

And as a marathon runner herself, she is well aware that there is still along way to go, even at this relatively late stage in the competition and with a healthy 1.5 million chips to her name:

“Playing poker is a bit like running a marathon – you have to make the right moves, increase the pace, and go with the leaders at the right time. This WSOP event is just the same. I’m just tucked in behind the leaders, but there are still plenty of others in contention – if the pace increases now I can’t be left behind otherwise I won’t make the final table. But I’m proud to be the final woman left in the competition!”

Leo works as a poker marketing manager for 888.com and as such is used to promoting other 888.com sponsored players at tournaments such as the one she is now starring in:

“I’ve been helping make 888.com the place for people to play poker at for over two years now, and although I’ve won a few minor tournaments this is really is a big break through for me! If there’s one tip I can give for anyone thinking of playing poker for the first time it’s to use the free tutorials and free poker games at www.888.com

A Breakthrough Year for France?

France appears to have a very bright future in poker, as all three of the French players are under the age of 25.

The Main Event total prize pool in 2009 is $61,043,600. A total of 648 players cashed in the event; payout for 648th place was $21,365.

2009 The 2009 World Series of Poker attracted a record 60,875 entrants from 115
WSOP: different nations competing for more than $174 million prize pool over the 57-event, 50- day extravaganza.

Darvin Moon, 45, of Oakland, Md.: 58,930,000
Moon, who heads into November as the chip leader, is the Everyman of the November Nine. A self-employed logger from Western Maryland, Moon learned to play poker with his friends and won his Main Event seat in a satellite (qualifying) tournament. This is Moon’s first appearance at the WSOP.

Eric Buchman, 28, of Valley Stream, NY: 34,800,000
Buchman, second in chips, is an accomplished poker pro with nine career WSOP cashes. He made a final table in this year’s WSOP, placing sixth in Event 25. His best WSOP finish was second place in a 2006 Limit Hold’em event, which paid nearly $175,000.

Steven Begleiter, 47, of Chappaqua, NY: 29,885,000
Begleiter is familiar with large numbers, having worked previously in high finance at Bear Stearns. Married with three children, Begleiter played in last year’s Main Event but was unable “to dance between the raindrops” to make it deep into the tournament. When he isn’t playing poker, Begleiter enjoys watching and coaching his kids’ sports teams. He heads into November third in chips.

Jeff Shulman, 34, of Las Vegas: 19,580,000
Shulman made himself known in the poker world at the age of 25, when he went deep in the WSOP Main Event. Nearly a decade later, the editor of Card Player magazine has more than $1 million in career winnings and finds himself at the final table. Shulman is fourth in chips.

Joseph Cada, 21, of Shelby Township, Mich.: 13,215,000
Cada, fifth in chips, has played in some 16 WSOP events and boasts nearly $500,000 in poker winnings. The 21-year-old’s hobbies include playing sports and spending time on the water. He was introduced to poker by friends who play professionally.

Kevin Schaffel, 51, of Coral Springs, Fla.: 12,390,000
Schaffel has been playing poker since he was 11 years old and regularly participates in family games. He owned and operated a printing company for 30 years and considers himself “semi-retired” after having recently closed the business. The 51-year-old plans “to play a lot of golf” in the coming days and weeks. He is sixth in chips.

Phil Ivey, 33, of Las Vegas: 9,765,000
Ivey, seventh in chips, is considered by many to be the world’s greatest poker player. At 33, he already has seven WSOP bracelets – two of which he won at this year’s WSOP. Often referred to as the Tiger Woods of poker, Ivey is a fierce competitor who has won millions in both tournaments and cash games around the globe.

Antoine Saout, 25, of Saint Martin des Champs, France: 9,500,000
Born in Morlaix, France, Antoine now calls Saint Martin des Champs home. One of three Frenchmen to make the final 27 of the Main Event, he won his seat into the tournament through an online satellite. He enters November eighth in chips.

James Akenhead, 26, of London, England: 6,800,000
Akenhead is a former railroad conductor and current poker pro who boasts a previous second-place finish at the 2008 WSOP, where he collected $520,000. His total winnings total some $700,000. He will be the short stack when play resumes at the Rio.

The “November Nine” – as those who make the final table have been dubbed – will resume play at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino on Nov. 7. When the final two players are identified, play will stop, resuming again on Tuesday, Nov. 10. ESPN will provide same day coverage of the winning hand and the awarding of the champion’s bracelet.

Each of the November Nine already has received ninth-place prize money of more than $1.2 million. This marks just the second time in WSOP history that each member of the final table will win at least $1 million.

Official prize money for the November Nine is as follows:

1st place: $8,546,435 6th place: $1,587,133
2nd place: $5,182,601 7th place: $1,404,002
3rd place: $3,479,485 8th place: $1,300,228
4th place: $2,502,787 9th place: $1,263,602
5th place: $1,953,395

A fabolous picture, in so many ways.

James - wonderful.

Only one Stars logo - that must hurt.

And the guy in the middle, whose advertising space is presumably up for auction.

I have this photo in un-compressed form - 30 times bigger than here - & if anyone wants it, just ask, & I'll send it on.

Inbound Blurb from 'Stars.

POKERSTARS DOMINATES THE WSOP ONCE AGAIN
Over 1,100 Main Event Players, 2 Bracelets, 113 Cashes and the Party of the Year

LAS VEGAS, NV – JULY 16, 2009 – A total of 6,494 players entered the tournament creating a total prize pool of $61,043,600; but only the final nine remain.  PokerStars, the world’s largest online poker room, once again had a dominating presence in Las Vegas throughout the 2009 World Series of Poker $10,000 No Limit Hold’em Main Event.

PokerStars provided over 1,826 seats to the WSOP Main Event in 2009 with close to 1,000 of those players accepting the challenge and playing in the event.  PokerStars also sponsored a number of celebrities and professional poker players into the Main Event, bringing the total number of PokerStars players to 1,100 - around one fifth of the field.  Some 113 PokerStars players cashed in the event, earning well over $7 million.  PokerStars sponsored player Kevin Schaffel of Coral Springs, Florida had the best performance of the group, and will return in November for the final table and a shot at winning $8.5 million, the WSOP Main Event Championship title and coveted gold bracelet.

“This is the largest land-based event in poker,” said 2003 World Series of Poker Champion and Team PokerStars Pro member Chris Moneymaker.  “It makes sense that the largest online poker site in the world has more players competing than any other site.  Every year PokerStars players show why they are the best at the WSOP.  I expect this year to be no different.”

Other PokerStars players that finished well in the Main Event include Team PokerStars Pros Dennis Phillips (45th place), 2008 WSOP Champ Peter Eastgate (78th place), Noah Boeken (96th place), Bertrand 'ElkY' Grospellier (122nd place) and actor Lou Diamond Phillips (186th place).  Hall of Fame pitcher Orel Hershiser, actors Jason Alexander, Marlon Wayans and NBA players John Salley and Jordan Farmar also wore PokerStars at the main event.  Alexander was among the chip leaders during day two and Farmar made a deep run, but neither made the money.

Outside of the main event, Team PokerStars Pros had myriad successes during the World Series. Poker legend Daniel Negreanu had the most cashes – a total of eight – including 2nd place in the $ 2,500 Limit Hold'em Six Handed event.  Barry Greenstein cashed seven times, Alex Kravchenko six and Vanessa Rousso four.  Angel Guillen, a member of Team PokerStars Pro Mexico won the first Team PokerStars Pro bracelet of the 2009 WSOP, and only the second bracelet Mexico has ever won, when he took down the $2k NLHE event for $530,548. Guillen’s win came only ten days after he was runner-up in the $2,500 NLHE event; his total winnings of over $800k made him the most financially successful member of the team this year.

Other Team successes included Tom McEvoy’s victorious win in the WSOP Champions Invitational event, EPT founder John Duthie’s runner-up place in the $10k event, Chad Brown’s third place in the $10k NLHE event, JC Alvarado’s 5th place in the $10k PLO and Ylon Schwartz coming third in the $ 2,500 Mixed Limit/No Limit Hold'em tournament. Greg Raymer won the single biggest prize - $774.927 for his third place in the $40k NLHE event, while Jason Mercier, who has just joined Team PokerStars Pro, won his first ever bracelet in the $1,500 PLO event.

“PokerStars players were very successful this year,” said 2008 WSOP Main Event Champion and Team PokerStars Pro Peter Eastgate.  “Everyone kept cashing left and right. This is the best time of the year for poker and PokerStars players.”

For very many PokerStars qualifiers in Vegas, the highlight of their trip to Vegas was not at the Rio and nothing to do with poker. As well as winning their seats, accommodation and spending money, they were also the guests of honour at the most spectacular party of the year and treated to a mesmerizing performance from hip-hop superstar Nelly.

The result of the Dream team competition at the Rio: we thought the team in 16th place were desperately unfortunate, probably hampered by the responsibility of living up to their name.
