Phil Ivey in the November 9: What will it do for poker?

Phil Ivey is a huge celeb in poker, he is one of the few players that are known outside of poker.

I am still shocked at this result, its such a huge achievement, they said that a well known pro may never FT again let alone win it.

If he wins the ME it will possibly be the most monumental occasion in poker history, agree?

With the press coverage and hype surrounding the November 9, will this attract more people to play poker, similar to the Moneymaker effect?

How will this impact the worlds view on poker being skill or luck?

So many questions I would like to know the answer to however I guess we will just have to wait and see

I think he is more likely to be known outside of poker than any other player.

When I posted I thought he was known as a high roller, just in general. Not just for his poker

There seem to be are alot of people in poker hoping he will be very outspoken, and a keen ambassador for the game. I think they will be very disappointed.

It's incredible that the best player in the world is there, but it's just not his style to say too much, and rightly so. There shouldn't be an expectation tied to the winner of the Main Event that they are going to be an ambassador for the game for the next year. I think it would be much better news for poker if it was someone like Negreanu.

Excellent for the 'is poker a game of skill?' debate across the world no doubt, very few people dont have Ivey in their top 5 players of all time, most have him as number one.

Not mega amazing for the wider appeal of the game, simply because he is so reserved and also has most of the poker communities money anyway. It will mean the most to the people that already play poker.

Hellmuth winning it again would, unfortunatley, be much better for the game overall and lets be honest, it would kind of be enterataining to watch (as would him losing to runner runner heads up).

They say a pro will never make the FT again, I actually think in coming years these events will be more and more pro heavy, the structure is getting deeper and the pros seem to be tearing it up at the moment.

Phil Ivey is not a "character," but he has no duty to be, he just puts his money down to play like everyone else. Infact, there are very few natural characters in the game, but a lot of artifical ones looking to get a chunk more money out of the system.

Something I found funny is that it seems to be pretty much accepted that Hevad Khan is a nice, normal guy, who put on a very good show of being an idiot to net a sponsorship deal. Can he really be faulted for it?

One great thing about Ivey at the FT, is that he only has to ladder a couple of spots to overtake Jamie Gold in the all time money list. 7 bracelets and all the $$$$ means Hellmuth can kiss his ass.

Maybe in the USA, but in the UK no.

If you aren't interested in poker you just don't know any players.  I know plenty of people who play regularly who still wouldn't know who the hell Daniel Negreanu or the Devilfish was.  They're just not celebs.  

It's just like a minority sport really.  No one would know a top bridge player, hockey player, bmx rider etc either.

Outside poker very few will know him. I think its a stretch to suggest a ME win for him would see a new influx of fishy money into poker. In general, poker players hugely over-estimate the popularity of poker in general. It's a very minority interest.
