Why all the hate over diving?  OK so we get upset when it happens against our team and its embarrassing when players do it badly, but the art if a good dive really is beautiful.  The fake contact, the jump in the air, the graceful fall to the ground, grabbing the 1st body part you can think of and roaring in agony, maybe a roll or 2 then nip back up as quickly as possible when it is awarded to grab the ball.

In short, diving is awesome!

Diving makes my blood boil!!!!

It's cheating, no place for it and in worst cases, can cause a riot if an important result was determined by this kind of act.

thats not what he was quoted saying in the papers up here.

FFS Cambo, that was almost pro-Celtic - that can be a bad habit Wink.

Some selective reading/quoting was being done. The ref actually that he reached what he thought was the right decision, which stood, he's made no comment on the TV replays. Someone's just politicising it....

Quote
Referee Manuel Gonzalez has come out defending his decision to award a penalty to Arsenal when Eduardo dramatically went down in the box after what appeared to be a challenge by Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc during the Champions League play-off.

Replays indicated that there was little or no contact with the 'keeper, with manager Arsene Wenger later conceding that the man in charge may have got the decision wrong.

"I made the decision honestly and during the game from my position," Gonzalez is quoted in The Telegraph as saying.

"My assistant also confirmed my decision.

"The Celtic players were very upset but my decision was based on what I saw, and it’s not easy for referees."

The match official signed off by claiming that everyone goes wrong once in a while and that it is a tough job to make the call within a fraction of a second.

"We make a split-second decision and without the help of television," he concluded.

It wasnt in the box it was out on the touchline.  At 1st glance it looked like contact and a foul, ref flashed the card and the defender started walking without much protest but then he was called back and it was McGeady was off.  Replays confirmed there was no contact and McGeady took a dive.

Great job by the ref imo, from the original camera angle I thought it was a foul so well done to the ref for spotting the dive and well done for having the courage to send him off and risk the standard bricks through the windows, hate mail and publication of his address and closest family member with an Ibrox season ticket on the internet.

Nah, 45 yards out on the touchline. I'd say he shat it rather than dived.

I made a point about uefa having 100 people a week to ban,i am aware that each national league is obviously run by that assocation my point was more so just that the rule can't just be for champs lge if they wan't to cut it out it has to be consistent and it has to be everyone in every league.I would imagine once a few have been banned they would probably all be told by there manager to stop and it would but it's no good just picking out one case when everyone is doing it just because the media want to make a bigger issue of and the scots are mental Smiley

I think a lot of players just do it naturally now, instinctive so it will take a lot to stamp it out completely.  When kids see it on tv they will do it when they play and grow up as a player trying to win free kicks like that.

mond, I think it was you that asked on one of the locked threads something like

'is it right that players who are done by uefa for deceiving the ref get a 2 match ban while those that fail to deceive him get pulled up for diving and just get a yellow?'

I'll have to answer on here obv

it's been bugging me tbh, it somehow doesn't seem right at first but it parallels how most countries' justice systems work I guess

you get more for murder than for attempted murder, more for burglary than attempted burglary. the intent is the same but you're penalised based on the result, is that right or wrong?

I still don't know if I think it's right though but thinking about it like that makes more sense of it to me (at least it did until I reread this post and realised it's a bit of a mish mash of jumbled thoughts)

Lol at anticipating the challenge.

'Chopper' Harris would have spent half of his Saturday afternoons stepping over prone footballers.

How about curing football of shirt-pulling, isn't just as deceitful as diving if not more so being 100% intentional ?
