I reckon it's the Notting Hill "race-riots" in the 1960's.

No - that model of Ice-Cream Van was not available in the 60's.

I have a book about the history of Ice-Cream Vans.

"Stop me & Buy One."

First edition and signed by the author naturally.

You must remember the Walls Ice-Cream bicycles, Ralph?

I certainly do Tony, I even remember feeding sugar-lumps to the coal-man's horse when we first moved to London.

My Uncle Law (he from my brothers story) started with an ice cream bike like those in Edinburgh and gradually built quite a company, Caley Ices which were one of the biggest Ice cream companies in Edinburgh in the 60' and 70's. Sold on and bought the caravan site at Little France which is now the site of the huuuuuge New Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh after he was bought out under compulsory purchase.

I'm none the wiser. capping wells is not in my knowledge set any more than putting out oil fires is. I kinda assume it's a giant version of a damp tea towel on a chip pan

Same idea Gatso, fire needs 3 things - fuel - heat/ignition and oxygen. By cooling down with water they take the heat away, by capping they are depriving of oxygen.

Occaissionaly the fire is too big to cap, so they cool down with water then use explosives to created a big puff of air to blow out the flame then cap.

There you go Ralph.

We used to feed apples to the UD (United Dairies) Milkman's horse!

Note that there is not one car parked in the street, & the woman's pinafore. EVERY woman had to wear a pinny.

Yes the milk continued to be delivered by horse-drawn floats for quite a while longer especially in the North of England, but for some reason the coal which was delivered on a flat trailer rather like a railway flatcar and driven by a pair of horses made a real lasting impression on three-year-old me.

In used to love seeing working horses with a nose bag on while the driver sat on the frontboard with half of shandy and a cheese and onion sarne.

There was until recently ( within the last 10 years ) an old boy in Bedworth still collecting his scrap with his horse every 2nd Tuesday.

Oh boy, that picture brings back such beautiful childhood memories.

Beware, I may have to make a Diary Post.

But that looks more like a donkey than a horse to my (untrained) eye. The Milky had a proper, great big, horse.

That stand looks very much like Highbury which is the only place where I've ever seen floodlights in a line across the top.

Following on from that it's probably an FA cup semi-final possibly Chelsea v spuds ?

Molineux also had them in the 50's.
