Far more beneficial to do the 45 mins in one block as you're trying to build endurance. But no problem starting off with 15 minute chunks and building it up.

Also far better getting out and walking than doing it on a treadmill.  The treadmill simulates the general exercise, but obviously the surface is different underfoot and therefore the muscles work differently.  Probably a similar thing to using a machine compared to free weights?  The other thing is that doing anything on a treadmill is dull.  Get outside and walk somewhere interesting, far less boring and monotonous. Listen to music on an MP3 player if that's your thing (which I do when I run), or even download some audio books or podcasts to listen to as you go if that's your bag.

If you're going to be carrying weight in a rucksack on the challenge, it does make sense to use it in training too.  Another reason to get outside.

Had a feeling you might say something along these lines.

I had a chat with my mate last night and this is definitely going to happen so the training starts now.

I've decided that while I'm training for this I'm going to drastically cut my usual leg work. I've always suffered with knee pains and obviously heavy leg lifts don't help one bit.

So from now on leg training will be minimal with that session focussed mainly on endurance work. Probably going to look at 40 minutes steep treadmill and then 40 minutes on a stepper. Hope I can handle the boredom.

I'll going to add an extra day in as well making it 5 per week with Saturday and Sunday being reserved for real walking.

I'm getting a load of OS maps from a friend who's a keen walker. He said he knows where there's loads of big hills so I'll be heading to find them in the next few weeks.

Should be an interesting few months seeing what happens with a totally different training schedule to anything I've ever done before.

Got a solution.  You walk to Wollaton park, and instead of a rucksack, you strap Ronnie to your back and then do the hilly bits like that.  That way you get to walk him sufficiently and get more miles in yourself.

Might make the hills a little tough though...

So much win in this post.

Should've said I'm probably going to look at 'working up' to 40 minutes steep treadmill and then 40 minutes on a stepper.

I don't expect to be able to do this for a little while.

I thought I was OK for doing 30 minutes on a 15-18 degree incline treadmill (7k an hour'ish) for my cardio....
have now given up on ever reaching that. I can row at a decent clip for 30-40 minutes. I can cycle for an hour with decent resistance. I can swim for 45 minutes..but I just can't do the treadmil.

TBF, I also can't jog for an hour or so as my legs simply won't have it.

I can't jog at all. Probably could with some decent trainers but no chance otherwise.

I wear walking boots for the gym anyway so that works out quite well for walking.

Last night I did 15 minutes at various inclines and speeds at the start of my session.

At the end I did max incline at 6kph and managed 5 minutes. That was ridic tough but I recovered pretty quick so it was more a cardio problem than a leg problem.

Going to push for a bit more today and see how I get on.

Hmmmm. Bit optimistic about the 40 minutes on a steep treadmill.

I started today with 20 minutes doing 2 minute intervals between steep and flat at a constant 6kph pace.

Ridiculously hard work even doing that.

To be fair this 20 minutes was more cardio than I've ever done previously in my life so I couldn't expect it to be easy.

Followed that with an abs session including planks to keep Boldie happy.

Then another 20 minute interval session and finally arms to finish off.

I'm now sat on the sofa fucking knackered but I've got to go out and walk Ronnie.

I wonder how long it will take to regret this 3 peaks quest?

Yep, that's how I felt first few times I tried doing that on the treadmill. Also why I gave it up and went back to rowing and, these days, swimming.

Unfortunately I don't think rowing or swimming will help me much in this crazy hill walking thing.

Back from a 5 mile walk with Ronnie so that's a total of just over 2 hours today. I only need to do the same thing about 6 times over!!

Matt (& others)

You may know im dieting, and looking to reach 14st! It's going great, but it's part of a prop whereby I gotta reach 14st by 30/08/11.

I am 14 12, so needing to lose 2lb per week to get there! However my weight loss has tapered and it could now get very close. Given I will have lost alot of weight by  the time I reach 14 4, if it gets close in the last 10 days, what is my best bet for some rapid weight shifting?

Incase it matters I'm following a low carb diet right now

I take it you're also going to the gym, right?

Losing 2lb a week should be OK. If you adjust your diet so that you take in 500kcal less a day than you require you should lose approx 1 pound a week. Burn off 3500calories a week (which isn't that much really) and that's your second pound.

I also take green tea tablets (alledgedly approx 80kcal a day) and a caffeine pill a day (mainly because it keeps my mind sharp at work after the first 10 hours a day..FML) and that also seems to work.

I'm not really exercising much. Low carb doesn't give you much to go on, so I just walk daily. I play softball on Tuesdays.

I am doing press ups, squats, calf raises and dips daily.

I take green tea, garlic and ALA daily 6 out of 7 days

My calorie intake is really low so eating less not much of an option.

Ah, don't think you can healthily lose 2Lbs a week by dieting TBH...though I could obv be massively wrong.

If you just need to lose a couple of pounds go to the steamroom for a couple of hours before the weighin or have a enema, job done Smiley

A year or 2 ago I went on a diet, wieghed around 16.5 stone at the time which although was overweight it was nothing terrible for my height. I lost at least 2lbs every week for around 2 months doing no excercise at all, had 2-3 meals a day, never snacked ever and was still drinking regularly, simples.
