Playing in the DTD Monte carlo, I sit on my table with a table full of unknowns (to me)

Start off standard semi tight trying to see cheap flops playing cash game style (cash games being my preferred area) nothing too dramatic and gradually build from 30 to 40k within a couple of levels.

Anyway getting to the point.

Blinds increase and ante's kick in. This is in my opinion where guts and skill take over.

Blinds 150-300 with 25 ante, and it becomes obvious / standard that a couple of players are now stealing and chipping up a bit raising to like 700.

One particular player to my immediate right is doing more than his fair share and it starts to really bug me. From his conversations earlier with another player and all the people who kept stopping by to say hello and shake his hand, it was easy to see he was a somebody in the poker world.

Ok. It's time I put a stop to this. He keeps stealing when folded around and stops me from stealing - the only solution is to 3 bet him. I've now been playing very tight and made a point of showing my big pp's and AK when I do raise so my image is now super tight.

I decide that i'm going to 3 bet him very soon after the button passes me.

Blinds still 150-300 - 25 ante with me on about 40k and in the cut off. Folds round and he makes it 725. I look down at and decide if you're going to 3 bet steal, it has to be some random hand so I make it 2200, folds back round and he has a think. All the time i'm thinking please please please just fold so I can show this. Him folding and me showing this would have made my day. I don't play many tournies, particularly big ones but this would have been as good as winning it.

Then it happens - he 4 bets me and makes it something like 6500. My first instinct is just to shove on his ass and make it an even bigger play than I had intended, the second option being to just pass, but no, I wasn't done with him yet. I now flat call in position with a view to shoving his cb on any flop that contains anthing to do with my hand and I mean anything. Any pair - any flush draw - any straight draw and even any gutshot. I might have even just shoved a scary looking flop.

Flop comes 10-7-2 rainbow probably the most uncoordinated unscary flop in the world. He bets about 7000 and I dwell and grudgingly pass, thinking to myself hmmmmmm nice hand well played etc etc.

The break comes and I enquire through a few friends who this menace is. Everyone is laughing at me and telling me its PAB, whoever the fuck Pab is, but apparently he's pretty handy winning the GUKPT main event in london and decent results on t'internet.

I did eventually get my revenge when I did the only thing that a novice tournament player can do to a pro - I sucked out on the river.

Quick summary- he raises UTG I flat with JJ flop 9 6 3 rainbow, he bets I flat turn 8 he bets I shove he calls and shows 8 9. I bink a 6 on the river - In your face Mr Pab - Owned.    Only joking Pab - you really are different class and it was a pleasure and an experience playing with you. I actually started feeling sorry for you when you were down to 20k and I was sitting with 100k. I knew exactly what you were thinking and you were dead right. My chips would have been put to better use if they were in front of you.

I'll get you next time

When Tony was telling me this during the tourney, the bit I liked best was when he got to the part where he gets re-raised to 6.5k.

Naturally I said 'so you folded'.

When he said 'no, i flat called' it did make me laugh and reminded me how our mind works sometimes when we're getting pwned

Agree with tikay, you write well - get over to the Luton G thread in the NY and write more and well done on a good run

Good story; well written, and right result.

The following is at least (and maybe only) the latter.

I recently organised our annual/occasional private cash game.  We're mainly recreational players, and some are very green.  Everyone's moaning I've invited this professional: "It's going to be too serious; he's too good, we're too outclassed".  Frankly, I've been moaning about it myself, although not to them, just to the professional.  Doesn't bother him a bit, just as long as I wear my poker watch and he can win it.

Anyway, he turns up and gets roasted.  He's the Christmas turkey and everyone wants a slice! Most get a slice, some get two, and the professional gets stuffed.  We play so bad, he can't win...

Moral of the story: don't try to outsmart much better players or much worse players.  Is that not correct Mr C?  Indeed, a lesson I've been too long in learning myself.

Anyway, I only wish my DTD war stories were as amusing.  Well, to poker players they might be, but the wounds are too deep.

Roasted indeed.

I must get out of the habit of thinking on level 6. I'm sure there's only 4 levels of thinking but by the time I get to the he knows that I know that he knows that I know which means he's doing this because he thinks i'm doing this because I know he's doing this, I forget what I was actually doing and for what reason.

The other problem I have is also thinking on the same lines as above and in actual fact all they are thinking is what they should eat for breakfast.

nice read WSOP  - especially as i was on your table (to Pabs right).

Pab played great - really steady away for the levels i played against him.

Without wanting to sound bitter - if I was you - id ignoring 'owning' legends like Pab  and go for the value on your left (mr JJ!!!!!). Even thou he had position on you - id have been in as many pots as possible with that clown!

FYI - the guy to my right was also pretty handy too - rivermanl on line! - Sigh - we had a tough table!

I knuckled back down and started playing normal ABC trying to pick spots to steal but generally only raising with a proper hand.

Eventually got it all in pf blinds 1500-3000 and me on 42k - made it 12k UTG with KK trying to get action, which I did. We get it all in pf but he has aces, both same suit as my kings and I couldn't bust them twice in 1 day.

Oh well - I did learn alot though.

Had problems with guy to my left. He had hit a few hands and had a huge stack, didn't want to get involved with him. He seemed to like seeing flops in position and I didn't feel comfortable playing him OOP.

I figured the guy to your right was pretty handy too. As I said in original post, it was him and Pab that were talking about Prague and EPT's etc etc that let me know they both knew what they were doing. He was also a bit of a menace blind stealer.

Unlucky for you though that he got stubborn with his jacks, but i'm no one to lecture, it was me getting stubborn with mine that crippled Pab.
