I trained for it but its such an unlikely scenario that you never expect to have to do it, the chance of survival is pretty slim unless the water is v calm as it happened to be that day.

The only time usually that you would aim to ditch in water is if you had no other option like stuck over an ocean i can't think many people have even attempted to land in a river.

So yeah although it's easier than it sounds like it might be to ditch on calm water he still did a ridic good job to keep the plane intact, the CRM displayed by that transcript shows perfect captaincy imo he made quick decisions that he committed too, he briefly asks for FO input but then maintains his decisiveness and keeps calm making him and the FO highly efficient, noticed on the wiki link that he worked on the CRM programme at US Airways so i guess its not surprising.

I guess what i am saying is the passengers that day were lucky to have such an excellent flight crew that day, not for the technical know how of putting the plane down safe but the execution of everything else.

My favourite bit is just after the birds hit he says "my aircraft" and there's a gap of about 0.0001 seconds before the other guy says "your aircraft"

That's procedural. He explains it in his interviews.

IMO the best bit of it all is still

Capt ' Any idea'

F/O 'actually not'

Absolutely brilliant.

I assumed that, it was just the lack of gap between the two statements that speaks to me. Smiley

The most important 4 words in a cockpit.

Funny stories of times those 4 words were not exchanged, one happened when I was trainning where one of the instructors and a student, the student had said 'your aircraft' but not been heArd by the instructor and missed he fact be never heard 'my aircraft' they had done this on final approach!! Plane was out of action fir a while after that.....
