Get fecking in there! Just off the phone with Rooks giving him the news. The break is above the joint so it shouldn't be as hard to fix as they'd feared. Surgery tomorrow. On phone now but will explain more when we get home.

oh that's fantastic Dawn - I know how devastated you were last night and it all seemed pretty hopeless.  Looks like we have another blonde fighter on our hands. xxx

Home again.  The orthopaedic vet said Cassie was a couple of inches lucky as the break is above the 'wrist' area of her foot and while both bones are broken, they're clean breaks.  He's going to operate tomorrow putting a plate on the big break.  He mentioned some other thing he'd do with the wee bone, but me brain was rattling with thoughts so that part kinda didn't sink in.  Will ask again tomorrow to be sure.  All going well, she'll be home on Saturday.

I asked him what her chances were of being able to run and play again because to be honest, that's what she loves to do and she'd have been miserable any other way.  He said 9 out of 10 dogs go on to live perfectly normal lives after a break in the same spot as hers.  Those odds were good enough for me.

His only concern is the fact it broke the skin.  Apparently there's a big risk of infection once the skin is broke, but with the proper meds and care (which she'll have), we should be able to swerve infection.  God knows we'll do our level best anyway.

The fee we were given over the phone wasn't accurate.  Fecker wants €800 due to all the extra care and meds she'll need.  She'll be under his care for 6 to 8 weeks and we're to bring her back to him every 10 to 14 days depending on how she's going.  As we'll be visiting him so often, he's said we can break it down into mini payments during our visits - so we'll get there in the end.

Once we got finished with the consultation I asked to see Cassie.  We were taken to the room where all the overnight visitors are kept and there she was.  'Hiya my wee baby' was the greeting she got as we walked over to the kennel and with that she lifted her head straight up and the tail came out.  Sarah reckoned our Cassie was getting VIP treatment as she was the only one with a heat lamp on her.  It's the little things in life that keep Sarah happy.  lol

As we knelt down to give her a rub, she started to whine a bit and tried to get up to us.  With that she left out a wee yelp and I said, 'No Cassie.  Lie down or we'll have to leave again so ya don't hurt yerself more ya goose.'  Didn't take convincing...she settled back for herself.  Once we had the kennel door open and were rubbing her I phoned Rookie with the news.  She kept her head lifted up to us for a good bit, but eventually her meds kicked in again and she nodded back to sleep.  That's when we took a couple of pics and said our good byes...for now.

Don't panic too much Dawn. All dogs have a natural will to survive so once she's back on her feet she'll be just fine. She won't even know that she's got a dodgy leg. If it had been amputated it wouldn't have upset her, she'd have just got on with it.

The best thing you can do right now is try not to feel too sorry for her when you're with her. I know it's next to impossible but just act as normal as possible or you risk changing her perception of you in some way.

She has no idea what's gone off but knows that she hurts and that her pack are suddenly all acting very differently to normal. Very stressful times for a dog.

Be thankful that it's only €800 as well. When Ronnie was ill a few years ago the total bill came to just under £5k. Good job he was insured although the same as you I would've found it somehow.

Good luck for the next few weeks of rehab. I'm sure it'll all be fine.

Too late.  Pretty sure I had that well and truly covered.     A few blondes had the misfortune of being the other end of a phone line last night...ty to them for keeping this lunatic semi-sane.  xx

Pretty much sucked big time at that today too, but will give a better go of it.

They're both very attentive to my moods at the best of times.  Will deffo have to be careful with them.  Lily has only just now settled down a bit since it all kicked off last night.  She knew something was up and not sure if she was looking for Cassie or what, but she's walked from room to room NON-STOP for nearly the last 24 hours.  She's finally thrown down at my feet for her first wee nap as we speak.  If that's how the relatively healthy dog has reacted to our mood, we deffo have to be careful to act normal so Cassie doesn't suffer more physically or mentally through this.  Thanks for that reminder.  xx

Fkin ell!  Did they make you sign a contract to hand over yer first born too while they were at it?

When I spoke to the vet's office on the phone this morning, they said €600 and we'd be allowed to spread it out over a couple of months.  Sarah and I had already discussed how I'd sort that amount, saying everyone would have to cop on for a few weeks.  No pub for the adults (Brian included) and no shopping sprees for the girls.  Not the end of the world and we'd get through it.

Once we got to the vet's and met the specialist, he'd bumped the price to €800...and said he wanted it all now!

'Oh fer feck sake.  I was told €600 on the phone and was already working hard to pull that off over the course of the 6 or 8 weeks I was told we could stretch it.  Jesus Sarah, what am I going to do?'

'It's ok Mom.  I've got enough to cover it in my credit union account.  We can just use that.'

My heart melted and sank all at once, god love her.  With that, the vet said he doesn't normally allow it, but we could stretch it out over the 6 weeks and no more if that would help any bit.  Sarah looked at me with a wee smile.  In turn I looked at the vet and said, 'Right, let's do it.'  We'd get it sorted one way or another, but we had to keep our promise to Cassie no matter what.

On the way home Sarah was still insisting we use her money and I was working out how we'd avoid that.  In the end I said to her, 'Look Sarah, don't worry about it.  Honest.  We've never left anybody in our house without what they needed and we aren't about to start now.  Besides, good deeds usually come back round for people so surely something will come up to see us through.'

As it turns out, I'd been telling Rookie the tale of Sarah's offer while we were at the vet and he's been in touch since.  He and his Dad want to help out by shipping half the cost to us.  I was in shock to be honest.  But they still love Cassie loads too and wanted to help get her better.  And we could do with the help, so I've accepted.  Life sure is a funny old sort sometimes.
