But I dont say Premiera Liga or Serie A when talking football amongst friends - I say the Spanish Premier League or Italian Premier League. What's the difference?

I really cant be arsed typing out 'English Premier League' in every sentence when we have the common place "which is the best league?" discussions.

Really? I would say La Liga or Serie A, or the Premiership

In Spain would they they call their League the Spanish Premier League?

I have seen you use the term grand slam games to describe games between Man U, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea though, so your stance doesn't really surprise me.

I fail to see a connection between these?

Saying 'EPL' is me being lazy is my point, badly made I admit lol (laughing out loud if I'm tilting anyone Wink).

Yes, thinking about it when I type I would say Serie A or La Liga I guess, but again that is laziness on my part and fear of my crap attempts at saying foreign words with an accent when speaking.

Well generally it's just called "The League".

So for me "The Premiership" is as much a media hyped Americanism as "EPL" ever could be. I take your point though. I guess EPL came from the SPL/EPL discussions back in the ABE thread days.

Its the premier league, there is more than one league known as the premier league so we clear this up by saying English premier league, or EPL.

I don't understand the problem.

It's THE Premier League though. It's never been the English Premier League. The Scottish have a premier league but as it's not THE premier league they have to call it the Scottish Premier League hence the acronym "SPL". That's the name of their league. We don't call it the Scottish Premier League to distinguish between that league and our own we call it that because that is the league's name.
It's the same as golf isn't it. We have The Open and the Americans have their version - The US Open. That's not a nickname we've given it to distinguish between the two that is it's name.
Also in Poker, America have the Word Series of Poker and Europe has the World Series of Poker Europe. I haven't yet seen anybody feel the need to add US onto the end of WSOP.
