The reason everything is so expensive in MC?

The residents pay no income tax, so the way the government raises money is by levying a very high rate of VAT.

The locals don't mind because they are so rich they are laughing at saving 50%+ of their income they would have paid in tax anywhere else in the world.

The visitors must cough up.

is monte carlo so expensive??

can anyone give any examples?

Cheeseburger and five chunky chips - 28 euros
Ham and cheese baguette - 10 euros
Packet of fags - 11 euros (although they do throw in a free box of matches, so a bargain really)
A beer (nice, mind you) 13 euros
Just had 'continental' breakkie delivered to room - four bread/croissant/jam/coffee/orange juice - around 35 euros inc delivery

From the mini-bar:
Coke - 6 euros
One of those (tiny) mini packs of Pringles - 6 euros
If you need balloons for a party, a pack of three is available from the mini bar at 6 euros

etc etc

Of course, the best value in Monte Carlo is http://www.pokerstarsblog.com - absolutely free!
I think i will open a chinese restaurant there seems ok to charge a premium in MC

A soup costs 28 euros. good luck trying to buy a restaurant

A small bottle of coke on F1 weekend can cost about €35. Yes the VAT is high but it's not 2500%

The high rate of VAT is barely relevant. It's only about 2% higher than in the UK.

The real reason they charge so much in Monte Carlo is simply because they can.

On a note a little less Balla, there was a restaurant on the beach nearby towards town that did pizzas etc for 15 euros.  If you walked right round to the harbour, you could get them for 5 euros.  And there was a supermarket up the hill where you could get everything at fairly standard for a beach resort supermarket prices.

I do remember jimmyz trying to charge us 200 euros for pretty much the cheapest bottle of plonk on the menu mind.

You can be sure the locals aren't paying mad prices.  They laugh at the rest who pay up and head 'round the corner to places you're on about.  They're the ones to ask.
