Tipping in tournaments
«

After playing the DTD £500 event last week and managing to min cash, i was taken to the upper tiers with some nice Polish girls from Pokerstars to sort out the money.
The form was filled out and the money counted in front of me, before she then asked if i would like to leave a tip for the dealers.
Now i wasnt sure where i stood with this - i have never been asked to tip before (despite a couple of final tables at Brighton) and thought it was just something that the winner did.
I had finished 70th and won £850 - a nice sum, but take into account the buy-in, hotel costs, petrol, food and drinks and that didnt leave a lot of change.
I asked her how much was normal and she said between 1 & 3 %.
I handed over some money, but she then went from being the nice, friendly girl to someone who seemed annoyed with what i had given her and couldnt wait for me to leave!!!
2 questions - do people think its right that all players who cash should leave a tip?
And if 1 - 3 % is the norm, was the winner expected to give up £2,400 of his winnings?
I'm not being tight, but I worked bloody hard for those 2 days for that money, and not one of those dealers managed to deal me AA, yet i am expected to give them extra money on top of their earnings.

Asking for tips almost certainly does increase the overall amount they get, but even without any other factors I personally wouldn't leave a tip if it was asked for.

Your not being tight at all.
You should not be tipping from a min cash in an event like that.
If the girl had that attitude then thats pretty bad.
As for the winner - if I won 80k I would maybe leave them a couple of hundred, not sure why anyone would think they deserve anymore?
I noticed it on the cash tables but it seems to have stopped now, maybe it was just my standard reply 'If Im up when I leave I will give you a tip, if your not happy with that I will explain to the table why its incredibly stupid to tip after each pot you win.'

Unless it was a decent cash, I wouldn't expect to tip.
It's also certainly not mandatory, and you shouldn't feel coerced into tipping, especially as you only just covered the buy-in and other costs like you said.

If the nice Polish girls were particularly fit then they could be looking at £50.
If they were hounds they'd be lucky to get a fiver.
Sorry if that sounds brutal but it's just the way it works.

Do pokerstars take 3% off the prize fund for the dealers in addition to the 10% fee. I know they did this at the EPT in London. If they did then I think it would be pretty reasonable to tip nothing even if you won.
But I don't see a need to tip when you cash for this much anyway. And if she got stroppy, I'd be pretty happy to take it back.

My attitude would be winner or those who chop tip, rest no need to
Interested if this is the case in the EPTs/WPTs/WSOP etc, or whether more widespread tipping is the norm
After all at DTD the players paid £60 each in juice. I suppose the argument would be that little of this finds it way to the dealers but I regard that as an employment issue for the dealers with venue/Sponsor/organsier, not a player's problem

Nice to know that everyone feels the same way as i do - i guess i just felt a bit awkward and was pressurised into leaving something.
At least i will know for sure next time.

i don't usually tip unless i win/chop a comp. I was asked once (at equal chance) if i wanted to leave a tip from a min cash (not much more than the buy in back) and I left £20 at the time coz i was caught off guard and didn't want to do the 'wrong' thing. Wouldn't do it again though.

I usually tip nice polish girls after a nice cash but that is usually after I have left the club.
It fckin grinds me people asking for tips - Vegas is the worse you end up paying tips on tips and they stand over you until you pay

if you are staked you have to tip out of your % presumably? never seen a staking request mention it.
