I don't quite see it myself tbh, perhaps the high praise is some kind of level, 6/10 probs a fair score

The work isn't mine tho. Once it is posted it belongs to all the little people, and they can revere it to whatever degree they choose.

If there's any youngsters watching, above post is example of when not to put a smiley to signify that you're joking, even though every fibre of your being compells you to do so.
Some people might think you're being 100% serious, but that's the sacrifice you've got to make for comedy comedy.

Although not a youngster, I feel I have much to learn from this post. I often find myself editing my 'joke' posts to insert a smilie at the end as often if I do not said posts can appear bitchy or rude, and indeed have raised such comment in the past. The instertion of the smilie feels like a sell-out a lot of the time though; a signpost saying 'look I've made a joke' at best and, at worst, 'look at me laughing at my own joke' which is a big no-no in the perfect delivery imo.
I'm going to be brave and next time I feel like making a joke I'm going to use a plain old full stop instead of a

I'll probably feel a bit dirty, but I think the rush will make up for that somewhat

this is true. is it wrong to want to make the hard of thinking appreciate one's jokes, or should one simply not give a toss?

It's not a blanket rule. If you think a smiley will allay bitchyness then your instincts are probs spot on.

You shouldn't tailor jokes to an audience - put the joke out there for what it is and it will find its own audience.
Smileys are like when a comedian makes a joke, then pauses and looks at the audience with a 'hey, I just made a joke - did you see what I did there' face - it can take the shine off.

while we're on the subject here's one thing that peeves me a bit. You make the perfect 'joke' post, getting the level of subtlety pretty much spot on, but don't use the smilie, then someone comes along and quotes it and spells out the joke thinking they've very cleverly made it themselves out of what they perceive to be your own one dimensional serious post. Is this just something all the great humourists such as AndrewT and thetank learn to accept as a small sacrifice for maintaining the integrity of their art?
