Whatever the real story is here, Thai justice is so fked up that he was always going to prison as soon as the police decided it was him. The way it works basically is they will say to him that if he doesn't plead guilty, he will spend the rest of his life in prison, or to scare him that he will face the death sentence (in reality they would never do that to a westerner). If he pleads guilty he will do less time obviously. He will have been told all this up front, i.e there is zero chance he will get off and made to sign the confession.

The other sick thing is, if he had enough money, there a possibility he could get away scott free if he did in fact do it. GG him in a Thai prison..........

Are these every bit as horrid as you'd imagine?

Ohhhhhhhhhhh yes.

Its a shame as Ron was a Tikay mentioned a great writer and a intelligent chap.  I was somewhat surprised when I found out about this and in speaking with a few others that personally knew him some said they werent surprised by it.    Me on the other hand, I didnt.

As mentioned above once the Thai police determine you are the one, then you are indeed the one, regardless.   He wont be resident in the BKK Hilton but I daresay wherever he is placed in Phuket it will not be grander on any scale.   I suppose one fortunate thing is he can speak Thai whereas a lot of english out there cannot.

I like to believe he didn't do it.

I don't know many people more stubborn, hoping he can resist pressure from the Thai police to make a false confession.

There's no way round it tbh, once they have decided its you your not getting off. You either plead guilty for a shorter sentence or rot in prison for the rest of your life, unfortunately corrupt countries in that part of the world have different rules to us and there is nothing you can do about it. Who's knows if he did it or not, but is very possible that this is not as straight forward as it sounds..........

I've travelled in the region plenty and know loads of expats out there, there are so many stories. I can tell you one thing, if it was a foreigner that was murdered, the chances are the killer would not be found or it would have been deemed a 'suicide'.

Whatever the MO of the Thai police, the detail of his confession plus the CCTV footage referred to make it look like a bone fide arrest. Would you be instantly insinuating he might be innocent if this was just a news story about someone not connected to poker? Perhaps if you ask nicely he will let you stake him into whatever games they play on the inside of his Thai prison...

Didn't say anything of the sort regarding him being innocent or guilty dude, just making the point about the Thai Judicial system and how it works.............

OK, but there was a fair amount of reasonable doubt in your insinuation.

Well there wasn't mean't to be, sorry.  I think my point was if somebody was actually innocent and they were arrested for something serious, there is not much chance of you getting off unless some clear evidence came out to the contrary, or you had a lot of bribe money. Even then, depending on how serious the offence was/how much they want to nail you even that might not be enough.

He's surely innocent until proven guilty.  So until the proper judicial procedures are carried out (and the suggestion that in Thailand they probably won't be) of course there's doubt in people's minds.

Not in Thailand mate they don't give a toss about your rights etc, and no I don't want to get into a long debate with you about it, having to provide evidence to prove it etc blah de blah.........
