Sad news, but no surprise given the long battle with cancer.

He was one of the great entertainers during snooker's height of popularity and was never too far away from controversy due to his erratic behaviour.

The image of him in 1982 with his baby after winning the World Championship lives long in the memory.

RIP Alex

A really special moment that Sheriff. I always look back on watching snooker in those days surrounded by family rooting for Davis or Higgins as some of the best days. That 1982 World Championship was a deserved title in many ways but I remeMber staying up late on the Friday night with mum dad and brothers to watch his semi with Jimmy White. This frame was just about as good as it gets, a 69 break when barely on a ball was simply stunning.
