Frankie Dettori was apparently denied boarding on his flight up to Ayr because he only had his driving licence and no passport.  He did manage to rush home and get a later flight (and ride the winner of the Gold Cup).

I suppose that at least it proves that no matter who you are, Ryanair will fck up your travel plans given any opportunity.

Lost me on this one. Ryanair state that you need to bring your passport for all flights, driving licence not enough. He brought his licence, had to go back and get his passport, put him in a rush, therefore they're stupid? Maybe I'm missing something here.
Meh, at least he'll be one of the few to fit comfortably in the seat.

Good, I would have been pretty outraged if he didn't have to show his passport because he is famous

It was a domestic flight - why should he need a passport?

failing to see the problem. he didn't have the right docs, they refused him boarding. simple

as he's italian he could actually have used his national id card rather than a passport, he probs had that in his wallet anyway

Italian ID issue resolved - flights restored
RYANAIR RESTORES ALL ITALIAN DOMESTIC FLIGHTS, AS AGREEMENT REACHED WITH ENAC THAT ALL PASSENGERS WILL PROVIDE PASSPORT OR EU/EEA ID CARDS

Ryanair, Italy’s favourite airline, today (7th Jan) announced that it would restore all its Italian domestic flights – without interruption – from January 23rd next, as Ryanair and ENAC today reached agreement that all passengers intending to travel on Ryanair’s domestic Italian flights will provide either a passport or valid EU/EEA National Identity Card in full compliance with the security requirements, which apply on all Ryanair flights across the EU.

Because Ryanair operates a policy of 100% web check-in, it is imperative for the safety and security of all Ryanair flights, that cabin crew and boarding gate agents can readily identify all intending passengers and this is why Ryanair requires all passengers to produce either a passport or an EU/EEA National Identity Card, regardless of whether the flight is an international or domestic flight in Europe.

If a passport was essential for security reasons then all domestic flights would insist that one is produced.  As this is not the case, the motivation of Ryanair must be something else.

I'm guessing that because only Ryanair are 100 % web check-in they need a quick, easy and reliable way of verifying ticket-holder identity.
Also, being dead cheap, they are prey to unauthorized resellers, so want to limit tranferability of tickets.

Just come back from the UKIPT Dublin, didnt print off my boarding pass 4 hours before the flight so they charged me €40 to print off a bit of paper that took 10 seconds, the flight only cost me £10 return in the first place!!!!

Reminds me of I think it was a Jasper Carrott story when he went in to his bank. They welcomed him with
"hello Mr Carrott how are you"
and then went on to say how much she enjoyed his show at the weekend and he thanked her for her comments. He then explained what he needed and the cashier refused as he had no identification.
 Roll Eyes

As for Ryan Air, i would never use them again unless there really is no alternative. They really don't give a rats arse about passengers.

As far as I know they are the only ones to use passports for domestic flights and found this old story:
