I think it is borderline ethics wise and to make a solid judgement you really need to hear the conversation between the 2 imo.

What I didn't like was the way Alex put it across on here, pretty much bragging about what a great spot it was fleecing his student. I think this is pretty unprofessional when the guy is effectively your customer. Certainly if I was the student and read that it would make me feel uncomfortable about our business relationship and it doesn't promote yourself very well if you wanted to coach others.

Pretty much hoping I got levelled here, cos it don't look good imo.

My first instinct when I saw Alex's post was that it sounded bad, but to some extent it depends on the teacher / pupil relationship.
If it's intended as a long term partnership then obv. bum hunting your pupil undermines this, but if it's just an odd ad-hoc session / lesson then it's not so bad.

Summed up my thoughts perfectly! Calling him the spot was what really irked me and why I posted

Really poor form esp the way you told it

Wtf is wrong with calling someone a spot? Someone that doesn't read blonde, and its my diary and I'm saying that he's a good spot. Come on, really.

Why are you guys even saying anything at all? You don't know me, and you're coming onto my diary and saying things that even if they were true I'd still just keep to myself if I didnt know the person, and if you don't know the full story just keep out of it. Whatever you feel, you're still just making me look bad whether you're right about the ethics or not. Why are you bothering starting all this?

Yes I think it's close, but the way the game started and my relationship with Cormac, it didn't even cross my mind as being unethical. The game broke down to just us, there was no seats on the other game. He said "we can play heads up if you want". I agreed. When the seats on the other game became available, he chose to stay and play, I did not persuade him or force him to stay playing with me. Of course he knew he was -ev vs me, but he's already told me he wants to learn by playing with better players, and he's quite happy to spend money learning the game by trying to beat better players. Whether that be by paying £50/hour for coaching, or learning first hand by playing heads up and then discussing HHs after. He was under no illusions. Don't question my morals when you don't know all of this. No-ones ever questioned my ethics in this game before, and I'm quite offended that two people I've never met before (well i've met Guy once briefly) have come onto my diary and said this without a) knowing the facts and b) no real business or purpose in doing so, just dragging my reputation through the mud for no reason.

Having chatted to Cormack a few times, and having dealt to both him and Alex on the same table, I think I can give a view into Alexs side. Yes Im bias because hes my best friend, shoot me Smiley.

When they were on the same table, Cormack seemed to be very eager to get into pots with Alex. Wether this was to prove himself to someone he looked up to or not, I dont know (I dont really care, just the point). Now if anyone was in Alex shoes, someone who isnt as good as him dying to play against him, they would take it. Alex is a HU specialist. Everyone knows it. Cormack knows it. Why would he turn down the opportunity to play vs a worse player who is absolutely dying to play against him? May as well light up your cigar with 50s imo.

Maybe the way Alex came across was what pissed everyone off. Its his diary, and he promised to be as honest as he can possibly be. Its why the diaries been successful, and its why it will continue to be.

Having met Cormack I have no doubt he would have been eager to play against Alex HU, probably looking to win bragging rights more so than money.

I can understand the moral point but I think in this relationship it is definitely not the case.

Alex, first thing first, I like you, you come across really well, I read this diary most days. This will be the last I post on this subject.

However, through fear of getting all Tikay on you, sometimes when someone says something you dont want to hear, for no benefit to themselves, you may wish to consider why?

One thing I have learned from blonde poker, is that people take note. This is your diary, you choose to have it, you put yourself out there, thats great and I admire you for it. However, please dont think that the only people who read and absorb this are your mates, 30 regular posters and a 100 regular blondes. Moreover, many people arent like me and dont express their opinion "outloud" on a forum.

So when you slated your student on here, safe in the knowledge he isnt reading, unfortunaely for you 100 potential students might have been reading, willing to pay you $50 per hour, maybe a $100 per hour if you turn out to be good at it. So working 3 hours a day, 4 days a week, you could earn good money tax free  and play poker for a living.............................................

I like your honesty on here, and maybe I could have PM'd you, but when asking a question where you might not want to hear the answer, sometimes your closest mates arent the best people to ask.

Im delighted that Cormac wants to play you, wants to donate to you even, and I hope you get it all. But remember it was you on this very diary who frequently mention GIQ, dont tap the glass, well I would add, dont bite the hand that feeds you (especially on a public forum).

Do you coach him heads up? If I played against my coach in a coaching session then I would definetely expect to receive the amount I lost back, or if I won I would return too. If its a coaching lesson you pay him X$ and do Y. If you're playing him then fair enough, I play rando Spanish guys HU often in Gib to get games going etc, but I definitely wouldn't put it down to coaching.

I'm pretty sure that if you start a thread on a public message board and then talk about a load of personal stuff on it, you can't say "WTF! It's none of your business! You don't even know me!" when people want to discuss said personal stuff on the thread. People's opinion might be right, it might be wrong, but if you post about it on here, it's definitely fair game for discussion.

This. It's a public diary, not a private one.

FWIW when I first read the post about playing him heads up I thought it was poor form without even knowing the student/teacher relationship. Purely down to the fact I would never name someone specifically on a public forum as a target. That person may go on to read it. Or another player may read it and mention it to them. It will never do your reputation any favours.

Don't see anything wrong as such with playing him heads up in the first place. That's your business. He knows the risks involved. But your post about it should have been of a much more professional nature imo. You could have simply said you played your student for an hour before others joined the game. Instead you gave the impression you saw it as an oppurtunity to take all his money and were pissed off that you didn't get to. Fine, nothing wrong with thinking that. We all do playing against certain people. But don't name people on a forum, and certainly not someone you're teaching. If any potential future students read that I doubt they would want your services.

Have I missed something here, I don't understand any of the last 2 pages of this thread?

Were you teaching this guy?

I never knew u were coaching - sorry for the lack of understanding.

From what I have gathered, the guys who were irratated from what you said about your student, was the way you went about wording it, that is all...

My advice would be to chill out and not let it get to you, everyone has different views, and everyone thinks differently, as long as dreeniee machiney likes you, u have nothing to worry about - gl  Wink

You seemed to have completely missed my point.

The 1st line of my posts said that imo judging ethics on this issue is extremely difficult without being there. I suggested you were unprofessional and that the way you expressed your thoughts on here was poor and reflected badly on yourself.

The below paragraph is what I am referring to

Then cormac to my suprise suggested we play heads up! It was like all my birthdays had come at once. He was sat with like 1300, and ready to give it away. Now the tables had turned, Mitch again was trying to break up our game so that he could get cormac on his table. Even when 2 seats became available on his game though, we carried on playing (I was doing a great job of keeping Cormac happy imho). I was winning about 200 after about an hour and a half, but just needed to make a decent hand that I could put all my stack in with, because he was gonna give it away if I did.

The bolded lines are really derogatory to your student especially when your defence to this is he wouldn't read it anyway. There is lot to be said in poker for not belittling your opponents and getting it quietly.

Whether I know you or not it is pretty much irrelevant in this situation imo. You have decided to use a public forum to express your opinions and therefore invited comments on everything you say, if you don't want a situation discussing you simply can choose not to post it.

I have obviously enjoyed the diary and believe it or not have a very positive opinion of you as a person and poker player from it. If I believed you to be generally a person of poor ethics and conduct I wouldn't have posted what i did.

I see what you're all saying, about the tone of my post being out of line and this may affect future students in wanting my coaching.

Tbh I'd never thought about taking the coaching thing more seriously and didn't think that anyone reading this would ever approach me for lessons. It's not as if I'm getting the lot. But I wouldn't want them to be deterred by seeing me slate Cormac on here. So I regret saying those things from a business perspective. I don't think it's immoral though. As you said, I'm very open and honest on here, so when I sit in a game with a big fish and I'm writing about that game - I'm not going to tread on tiptoes, I'll say there was a big fish there. I didn't specifically call him a target, I just said he was a good value spot. When I said "keeping him happy" that's just standard behaviour in the live poker world. Sharks keep the fish happy to keep them coming back. I won't mention his name, but someone I know is an absolute boss at keeping fish happy and it pays so many bills. It's just part of the game. There's people that I make special efforts to be nice to because they'll give me action in the future. People have been saying "think these things, don't say them on here". Well I'm just being myself on here. I'm probably naive in doing so, but in this case, the guy doesn't read blonde, and is flying/has already flown back to Luxembourg having done his poker roll one week after his lesson with me. More great advertising for my coaching skills. If anyone's interested, I have a slot open now. Do get in touch x
