Alex do you have a re entry and did you put any thoughts into which day 1 you played. this field is awesome. usually you get 90% idiots at dtd but i reckon today it could be as low as 50/60%. not a level but genuine interest in why you would choose today to play

As his backer I asked him the same thing earlier.  He said he'd just walked to dtd and couldnt be arsed to walk home again so he'd prefer to play today.  For the record didn't think the field looked that awesome - my table was so soft i managed to last a whole three levels.

So Day 1a of the Monte Carlo.

Chipped up early to get to 45k on the dinner break. First level back go on a massive rush. Raise K7 in the cutoff and make a house to win a big pot off Chris Brammer. Then find aces three times in the next half hour, twice allins for decent pots. Up to 100k average 35.

I danced a bit with Pab with some preflop battles, then play a big pot with Jim Moult with 99 on T97hh where he cbets, i raise, he 3bs and I 4b shove he tank folds.

With 3 levels of the day to go we have 120k and get moved to a new table. Hi derr Mr Nick Hicks, Mr Nik Persaud, Mr Toby Lewis and Mr Rob Yong. Bloody Marvellous.

I tighten up a bit and I'm happy to see Toby, Nik and Nick all get knocked up within an hour.

Rob has all the chips, and managed to do something I've never seen before. Bluff two people off Aces and Kings in the same hand. Was a thing of brilliance. He's opening every hand and I don't really want to tangle. I run TT into AA vs table chip leader Stuart Fox and lose a bit then lose a couple of other small pots. Down to 80k going into the last level, which was below average.

Knock out Pab with AK>AJ all in pre for 20bigs and then knock out Vargas wiht AQ>Q2 allin on Q high flop. That gives me 132k to end the day with, average 123, 21 making it though from day 1a.

About the strength of the field, I think it was definitely overexagerated by the presence of a few big names. Of course it was tougher than the deepstack field because it attracted these guys but it was still basically the same faces and same standard of players. My first table was soft, except for a couple of spots and the second table, once Toby, Nik and Nick and gone was seriously soft. Apart from Rob being there it was a dream table. I mean the guys folding AA and KK to Rob were just lol. Others were calling raises out of 10bb stacks, raising out of 13bigs then tanking for shoves, it was comedy. I definitely wouldn't say it was a mistake to play today rather than tomorrow.

Heard a good one today from Tim Slater, talking about calling shoves preflop

'Mickey Wernick said to me the other day:

"There's no such thing as being pot committed, if you're beat, you're beat, simple as that"

I never thought of it like that', Tim goes on, 'if you're beat, it doesn't matter how much is in there, just fold'.

being at a tourney table with Rob when he has the planet sounds like it could be the most fun ever, if you like busting out of donkaments in 300big blind pots that is lol
