I am going to have to join the old and boring club Alex.... (said like I'm not in it already eh!)

I think a car is a good idea in that it will open up alternatives options for you, in terms of travelling to to juicier cash games but also in other aspects of life.... Having said that though, go for something sensible.

Reliable, economical, cheap insurance etc. A diesel would be better imo. For 3K you can get something pretty smart that fits all this criteria.

As a family we run two cars and I personally have commuted to work for 10 years, I would hate to know exactly how much I've spent on motoring in that time... and it never ends...

(just read this post back and if ever there had been any doubt regarding my 'old and boring status' then it has been effortlessly removed)

As you will have zero no claims, you will get destroyed by insurance on just a fairly normal Focus/Astra....that will only increase on a 15k car.

3-5k will go a long way in the used car market right now.  You'd be surprised at what you can pick up.

£15k on a car!!!

Are you fucking nuts?!?!?!

That's going to be costing you £3k a year in depreciation, £1.5k insurance and loads more on fuel and servicing.

Also unless you're planning on buying another one every year, next year you'll have a £12k car so what do you do then?

Actually what the hell am I on about. I had a £15k car when I was your age and it was amazing!!

Get it done and enjoy it. I'll try to keep my sensible thoughts to myself.

was going to post exactly this!

I have wasted more money on cars than I care to add up over the years, but have some pretty special memories of all of them

i really wouldnt go for the beamer audi route thou.

you are young and free and you can always drive those cars. get something that you will be restricted to having later on when wife kids mortgage get in the way

10k will get you plenty in the 2nd hand car market.

cars are obv personal pref and if you really want the 2 brands you suggest, make it one worth while  - dont go "grey"

personally at your age I was very much teh sports car 2 seats or 2+2 end of things and there are some great retro car out there and specialist insurers can really work theor magic i fyou buy right

It will absolutely be a waste of money  - you are burning 5k a year no doubt - but i personally have never regretted it

Dunno why people are saying insurance will be crazy because of no claims, it's my understanding that no claims only goes to like 40% for 5+ years. More important that he's in his 20s now so should be fine on any reasonable motor, say 1.6l petrol or 2l diesel or less. Postcode probs more important imo, are you NG1?

edit: @Guy, what is that car, and do they make one for men?

Spending £15k on a car is almost as bad as an idea as getting a cat.
