Drove down with Hannah to Cambridge to attend a church service for which my brother had written a piece of music. He composed it, rehearsed the choir and conducted them tonight, not bad for a 17 year old.

For those who don't know, from the ages of about 8-15 I was in the church choir, rehearsed every friday night (lad) and went every sunday morning. I was never really religious I just loved (and still do) love church music. Music written centuries and centuries ago is still performed all over the world - I think that's pretty amazing.

I realise I'm in the absolute tiniest of minorities on this one, I don't know anyone my age except a couple of school friends who share this passion, so it mostly slowly dies away until occasions like today or Christmas where I rediscover it.

During the sermon, I got to thinking about how refreshing it is to go to church as it forces you to just sit there in silence and think, which is something that I for one never ever do. Even as an unemployed 23 year old, with few responsibilities, I never just sit there and think about things. There's always too many distractions. You get lots of productive things done just by sitting and thinking about them and it helps you to realise and solve things much quicker.

Like I said, I'm not religious, and the religion isn't shoved down your throat in this church, it's just there if you wanted. However, during the prayers I couldn't help but pray to "run like you in vegas" haha. Probs getting smitted now on the plane lol.

Really Interesting stuff Alex

I think it takes a certain amount of character to post about churches and choirs etc in this modern age & even more so in the poker arena where a lot of people have a one dimensional topic of conversation.

I love architecture and of course some of the best preserved is in church form , and as you say sitting there in complete silence thinking about what has gone before you is in total contrast to the noisy , hustle and bustle experienced in casinos and card rooms.

Id be telling porkies if I said Id not asked for some divine intervention at the green felt especially when Ive only got 3 outs  Wink

Good Luck in Vegas

Fine post Fraser, fine post.

".....sit there in silence and think......"

Might just be one of THE most under-rated things ever. Deffo beats some of the dumb knee-jerk reactions we see when people rush to post on forums without thinking it through. I spend hours & hours in silent thought, don't need the TV on, or music, & somehow I try to find ways in my mind to solve stuff that at first sight makes no sense. (If that fails, I just ring Tom or Mr Giblin!).

Your diary just gets better & better Alex, you are brave enough not to "follow the fashion", & I hope you remain brave enough to continue to plough your own furrow.

Pretty proud of your Baby Bro, I'm guessing? I can barely imagine a 17 year old composing music suitable for a church. Much respect to him.

There you go, you see. Is it "smitted", "smited", "smitten" or "smiten". Or just plain "smite"?

Not sure if our resident pedants & policemen visit here often, but no doubt someone will put us right. Greeky will delegate this one to gatters, I'm pretty sure.

"smitted" sounds plain wrong, "smitten" better, but I think I like "smite" best, used universally.

You shall be SMITE down. Yes, I prefer that. Smite use that myself.

so will you be bite or bitted if you poke a hungry lion with a stick?

Smit or smitten I reckon, and smitten has more gravitas so that gets my vote.

Btw, i'm pretty sure God is way too busy to bother smiting people individually these days.

100% agree.

Anyway, Alex is gonna be so mad with us when he finds the wrinklies & pedants have destroyed his Yoof Diary. Poor old "Ape & a Notebook" must be wondering wtf.

Ladies & gentlemen, you may return to crushing & the like.
