if you can get 1.4 and 1.5 then there is no reason to charge it. Titty might be a bit unfair.

Loving the report on the
hand
hand sounds pretty fine to me tbh, obviously the river is fkn gross its really really hard not to have the best hand but then you can't beat any value bets and most of his range doesn't need to bluff
One thing i'll say about pre-flop - I personally think limping as an exploitative strat is abso fine/actually pretty good, you're in an aggro game, on berridge's straddle with a nice playable hand, it's the best way to ensure getting to a flop and going from there, BUT like you said limping isn't part of your overall strategy so your PF range is severely capped pf - spesh with these stacks I think you wouldn't actually even limp small pairs as it;s quite delightful to get 3b with 55 in a splashy super-deep game. As a result I think it's quite important when good players are in the pot to not take too much early street aggression because you can get punished really hard for having an ultimately weaker range on a LOT of textures.
Pretty sure this
guy has only continued as he realises that only a very very small % of you
Xc combo's would limp p/f and you wouldn't limp bad suited K's and J's and he blocks
/
- I basically kind of agree with your being "relaxed about the RIO thing" but I'd take much more passive post-flop lines against good players unless i start to build stronger limps into my game as a strategy, which tbh I think there is no need to do.

Been a pretty interesting situation for me with this staking thread I put up yesterday. I've just posted this in there:
Quote from: cambridgealex on April 02, 2013, 06:26:07 PM
Hi guys,
I've always tried to find a balance when pricing up stakes between maximising my own income as a professional (get the best price I can sell out for) and giving the community an appealing and profitable investment.
I've always priced things according to my beliefs about the value of the investment and often taken advice from those better placed to judge. I've probably had 20 or 30 threads on here, all of which have sold out, and 95% have sold out within the first hour.
To me this thread is no different to any of the others, well not "no" different, but certainly it surprised me that a 5-10% price difference has made the difference between selling out in 20 minutes, and barely selling at all.
Anyway, the fact is it hasn't sold, so that can only be my fault for pricing it wrong (although I don't think titaniumbeans comment basically saying it was a joke helped at all - in fact almost certainly put a lot of people off, because they don't want to buy something that somebody else considers a joke).
I respect market economics and when something doesn't sell that needs to be sold, I have no problem reducing the price. What I think it's worth is largely irrelevant - after all, is worth only what someone else will pay for it.
So I'll close this one and start a new thread selling at 1.35 and 1.3 and we'll see what happens. Lion Rampant and Keys will of course have their pieces reserved and pay the new price.
Thanks guys.
It was a horrible feeling actually the last 24 hours of feeling like I had got this one majorly wrong and to feel like I was taking the piss, and to not sell out in an hour, like I have done for over 20 threads over the last 2 years probably, wasn't nice.
I feel like it's good for me to have been taken down a peg or two and I've been forced to swallow my pride and drop the price which was pretty hard for me to do. But it's important not to have an ego about these sort of things I think so I think I've done the right thing. Although I didn't like it, it's probably a good thing that this has happened.
I can't quite get my head around the reasons why it hasn't sold - I guess people don't really believe me about how good value the Monte Carlo is going to be, with tons of satellites and possible overlay not to mention "home advantage" which I believe to be hugely important, I think it'll be one of the best value tournaments of the year. And I guess not many people have played much poker in Spain... Anyway, with the price as it is now, it's definitely one of the best value packages I've ever sold, so if it doesn't sell out, I'll be completely bemused...

Spent Sunday and Monday with my family in Cambridge, was lovely - we even Skyped Bobby on easter sunday who is on tour in the USA with Out of the blue having a mad time. They've just had 11 days in Hong Kong performing to thousands every night, everyone going mad for him and his friends, and having some incredible experiences there. He's totally burnt out now and still got 2 more weeks to go...
My other brother Mark is very down, after 7/8 stages of interviews, assessment days, getting through 3000 people for 15 places, he's basically pure bubbled his dream job the other day. He's graduating this summer and needs a job pronto. He's back to square one now but will get there, he's never been one to be down in the dumps about anything, he'll pick himself back up.
I'm back in nottingham now, back to the grind tomorrow probably.

Not many people land their dream job straight out of uni! What sort of job is he looking for?

OK, I want to ask a serious question here; why is it good value? Surely it cannot be solely based on what you say as that's just the same as an advert for double glazing with the seller saying 'they're the best value windows ever', etc.
I don't 'get' the staking thing. On the one hand you are asking people to buy action but at a premium, so why isn't it at spot rate when effectively you are asking for money in order to do something that you want to do, with a fairly good chance of a nil return? And, secondly;
You scooped over £20k less than a week ago plus other bits and bobs on the cash, so why ask for anything at all? It seems odd to be saying 'I'm going to gamble some money, so give me some of yours even though I have plenty'.
This isn't a wind up, I've been meaning to ask somebody this for quite a while.
Thanks in advance.
I think he lost a chunk before the 20k win though. I'm sure Alex will explain better tho

people were just testing you on

It's similar to other threads of mine that have sold out in the past, I won't lower it but won't be offended if I don't sell out, and will adjust for next time.
obv
Joking aside, I think that people know that lots of people will sell for these comps and last year lots sold at 1.1-1.2 and they can buy a single package and have a larger %. To be honest, you will be better value than most people who sell at 1.1 for just the monte carlo, but I know from speaking to people (not about this but staking in general) they like to have a bigger piece and don't like to have 1% etc and even for the semi ballers, over £700 for 10% is a decent amount.
I was heavily considering how to do it in my package too, which is why I did the option of people just buying for the 1 entry as hopefully its likely we just use one entry and for half the price they can have double the equity.
Both tournaments really are great value and because they have names and prestige people will often just expect them to be tougher than they actually are.
I'd also say a reason is that before when you had sold there were Keys and a few others receiving pretty large MU's wheras recently there has been a lot of the 1.1-1.2 kind of region, which kinda reiterates the point about the "market state"
Regarding 0800 points, they are completely wrong imo, just because Alex binked 20k, doesn't mean he should just go and spend 25% of it on 4 tournaments.
I personally would have definitely bought at the new markup, but when you bought in me at a smaller markup it feels like I'm paying for you to swap with me, and even though that may be a good deal for me, I have too big of an ego to do
Hope none of this came out as bad?

I think staking punters are doing exactly that. Punting. People don't mind paying a bit of vig as they realise they are sat on their butt while you are away incurring expenses and doing the legwork.
The problem arises when the vig reaches a point where it becomes possibly a bad bet. It is nothing to do with stakees ability really either as only decent players would get staked at say 1.2.
There is so much variance involved in live mtts even Phil Ivey would be a bad bet at 1.5 in my opinion. And more so against a minefield of non folding Euros. You are a great tourney player and have a strong presence at the table from what I saw on streams. The majority of your backers might see it like me though as they play poker too.
Can't wait to see what happens with this new stake. And you are doing nothing wrong by finding out your value either by the way. I for one would piss myself if you binked one.

It wasn't a surprise that the high mark up failed. It just starts to look a bit greedy i think and emotional factors will often outweigh economic factors.
Beyond this, I think the 'great value' concept can, at the least, be challenged.
It would be interesting to have some real stats to look at, in particular as I think it is easy to acknowledge you are probably one of the top 10-15% players in the field.
I'd be fascinated to see your ROI for all £500+ tourns you've played lifetime. Then I'd like to see it with best 5 and worst 5 removed.
It would also be interesting to see the number of no cashes, min cashes, and then cashes where the return is greater than 5-1, ie a deece punt/return.
I'm genuinely interested if it shows that someone can have a great ROI lifetime and at the same time show a decent return to a one time punter of 1/50 times.
I'm guessing we would only find out that staking is a fun gamble & sweat and that most stats allow us to infer what we want.
Anyway, the basic point is that from an emotional point of view, people need to feel the fun gamble/sweat doesn't also leave you feeling greased and a little sore.
The great James Dempsey did not look for mark ups like this in recent requests and he is James Dempsey.
